Build

Before we start, there is a boat included with the set and this is the first time that it has been in a white color. There is a sticker on the back naming it Leda. It most likely refers to someone important to the LEGO designer or fan designer. Also included with the set is a cat companion.

The lighthouse sits on top of a rocky island structure. It utilizes a number of BURPs to give the structure some height as well to give some space for some hidden areas underneath the lighthouse. Here we have the Powered Up battery box which is concealed on one side of the island. The rock section easily pops off to get to the box. On the other side, there’s a little opening in the rocks for a treasure chest containing some gems. There is also a lever to turn on the lighthouse. A lone segull sits on top of a rock.

The cottage is pretty simple for a one person inhabitant area. The roof lifts up to reveal the interior and there’s a bed on one side and the cooking stove on the opposite. The stove lights up using the LEDs that connect to the side of the building. The detailing on the exterior of the cottage was tedious to line up the tan ingot pieces.

The light tower is very straightforward as the sections are build very similiarly with little subtleties between them. The cables are neatly hidden on the side but takes a bit to get it fitted in without pinching them.

The top of the lighthouse has the most interesting aspect of the set which is the lantern room. Here we have 22 clear garage door pieces to create the cylinder that covers up the new Fresnel lens. It is a piece specially made for this set that uses a mirror sticker to refract the light coming from the LED underneath. There motor powers up the gears that connects to the axle that runs down the side of the tower which in turns the light.

LEGO Ideas Motorized Lighthouse (21335)

The LEGO Ideas Motorized Lighthouse (21335) looks very close to the original project but LEGO had it minifigure scale instead of it being microscale which I think is an improvement. The rocky structure is more rugged and this enhances the overall build. Hiding the battery box and switch inside the rocks is a smart way to do it and I don’t really see it being done any other way. The lighthouse itself works fairly well although the light isn’t as bright as I thought it would be.

The price of $299.99 is a bit high, most likely due to the addition of the Powered Up battery box and light cables. These two items already make up $45 of the set which is 15% of the cost. The dark blue baseplate is also a new item and that could cost between $8-$15. Taking that into account, LEGO is left with $247 of the cost for the rest of the pieces. The new Fresnel lens could also take a little bit off as it had to be specially made for the set. Depending on how much at part costs, we’re at about $0.12/piece which is not too bad for a set this size although there are a number of smaller pieces that inflate it a little.

Taking everything in account, it was still a fun set to build and I expect others to feel the same way. It does make a great display piece and would fit into an ocean layout.
