LEGO Brick Patent Celebrates 55 Years Today

On January 28, 1958 at 1:58pm, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen and LEGO filed the patent for the modern LEGO brick. Before, the bricks’ locking ability were very limited and Christiansen and his engineers came up with an updated design for the now stud-and-tube coupling system, which we all know and love. This new design made all the models more stable with better locking ability. One unique feature is that the bricks will hold well together but can also be taken apart by anyone with ease. On this day 55 years ago, the original design was sent to Danish patent offices and patent DK92683C. Legetøjsbyggeelement. was granted on January 29, 1962. Many years after that, LEGO has became one of the most successful toy companies in the world.
