Billund, Denmark, April 2, 2024: The LEGO Group, LEGO House and the LEGO Foundation today announce a range of long-term initiatives designed to support and celebrate neurodivergent children and adults to mark the start of World Autism Acceptance Month.

The United Nations has adopted an International Day of Play to protect children’s right to play and it will be held on June 11.

UN signals importance of play by adopting official International Day of Play

• Global partners have successfully called on the United Nations to adopt an International Day of Play to champion and protect children’s right to play.
• The International Day of Play will be June 11th, with the inaugural celebration to take place in 2024.
• Global research surveying more than 25,000 children across 36 countries reveals that as many as 73% of children don’t believe adults take play – and how it can help them learn – seriously1.

Billund, March 26th 2024: Play is a fundamental right for every child. Yet, the importance of play in helping children develop life-long skills is often forgotten. With only 30% of adults aware that play is a fundamental birth right adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 19892 there is an urgent need to put play back on the agenda.

To drive this ambition forward, a dedicated network of global organisations, play experts and, most importantly, children and youth themselves, have called on UN member states to support the resolution for an International Day of Play. The LEGO Group, the LEGO Foundation and other founding members of the movement are proud to announce that the UN General Assembly has adopted this international awareness day.

The LEGO Group has released their earnings report from 2023 and revenue was up despite a slow toy market. Revenue was up 2% compared to 2022 while consumer sales grew 4%. The top performing themes include LEGO Icons, LEGO City, LEGO Technic, LEGO Star Wars, and LEGO Harry Potter.

The LEGO Group delivered topline growth and outpaced the market in 2023

Highlights FY 2023 vs. FY 2022

• Revenue was DKK 65.9 billion up 2 percent despite declining toymarket.

• Consumer sales* grew 4 percent.

• Outperformed the toy market and significantly grew market share globally.

• Operating profit was DKK 17.1 billion against DKK 17.9 billion in 2022 as the company accelerated spending on strategic initiatives to support growth. Operating profit grew 7 percent in H2 vs. H2 2022.

• Cash flow from operating activities increased 1 percent to DKK 15.4 billion.

• 60 percent increase in spending on environmental initiatives in 2023.

The company grew revenue two percent to DKK 65.9 billion despite a difficult external operating environment and significantly outpaced the toy market, growing market share. LEGO designer, James May, has recently announced that he has left the company and is now pursuing a new venture. May has been designing or collaborated on a number of sets for quite a few years now but has now started up a new YouTube channel that you can check out. It’ll be a weekly show that takes a look at behind the scenes on what LEGO sets he has worked on, similar to a designer video but on a more personal level, as he states.

Since I returned to the hobby over a decade ago, Bricks by the Bay has been hosting their annual LEGO conventions and have been doing so until last year where it was cancelled due to reasons unknown and was looking forward to holding one this year. They have recently announced that Bricks by the Bay has been cancelled again for 2024 and will be on indefinite hiatus. Again there was so more information besides that but will update when they decide to return in the future.
