The new LEGO Ideas Pixar Luxo Jr. (21357) was just announced a few days ago we’re checking it out to see if it’s worth picking up. The set has 613 pieces and will retail for $69.99 which is a relatively cheaper LEGO Ideas compared to the previous few releases.

Build
The first part of the build is for the Pixar Ball. It has a neat building technique to get it to the almost perfectly round shape. The “frame” of it actually contains some Easter eggs hidden within the four columns. These include Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, Sully and Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc., Alfredo Linguini and Remy from Ratatouille, and Carl Fredericksen and Russell from Up.

After that, there are some plate areas that include references to characters from The Incredibles. Triangle pieces are used to cover up the gaps that can’t be covered by the printed dome pieces.

On to Luxo Jr., the base of the lamp also is filled with more Pixar references including Joy and Sadness from Inside Out, Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars, Miguel Rivera and marigold from Coco, and Flik and Dot from A Bug’s Life.

There’s a swivel joint right above the base which is secured by a ball joint brick underneath to lock it in place. The curved tiles cover up that area nicely and can’t even tell that it’s there.

After that we have the frame for the arm. It uses both System and Technic parts to give it the look and the use of metallic silver 1×1 round bricks are a nice touch as well.

One of the neat features of it is that it is able to bend forward just a little. This is because LEGO opted to use rubber bands between the coil pieces to allow the top to push forward and snap back into place.

On to the lamp shade, they are new parts specifically made for this set, for now. There are some printed bars for the slots. The bottom of the shade has a ball joint that connects to the top of the arm.

The light bulb has your final Easter egg. Inside the base is a micro build of the Pizza Planet Truck that has made appearances in numerous Pixar movies.

Lastly, we have another base that you can use to recreate Luxo Jr. standing on the ball. This is achieved by taking two of the dome pieces off and connecting the ball to the plate and lamp. It is surprisingly strudy enough that the lamp won’t tip over.

Results
Overall I think LEGO almost hit it out of the park with the LEGO Ideas Pixar Luxo Jr. (21357). The whole set has that cuteness aspect to it and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get it which is a major plus in my book. All the little references to the Pixar movies is also a nice touch and they don’t distract from the overall look. It does match up to the original project a lot and there was some improvement to the shade and the light bulb. The only thing that I would’ve liked LEGO to do was to put in a light brick for the bulb but that would’ve probably bumped the price up a little.

Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
