LEGO Party!

The party game genre has been a staple in the gaming space for years now and the latest addition is LEGO Party! The game was released back in September with a decent fanfare and promotion. We’ve finally had some time to play the game for a little bit and here are my impressions of it.

At first look, you could say that LEGO Party! is a distant offspring of one of the more popular games of this genre, Mario Party. The game features 60 LEGO minifigures that you can unlock while playing 60 different minigames in Challenge Zones which include, Pirate, Ninjago, Space, and Theme Park. Depending on how long you want to play, you can also customize the number of rounds from the shortest (6 rounds/45 minutes in Pirate Zone) to the longest (24 rounds/180 minutes in Theme Park Zone).

If you want to play some faster games, you can do the Minigame Rush where you play a series of themed minigames to win the most studs. You can also do practice runs of each of the 60 minigames as well.

For the Score Chaser mode, you can try to do your highest score from a selection of five minigames.

While setting up the games, you can either play locally with friend or the CPU or you can host online games by sending out a room code. If you play locally with the CPU, you can also adjust the opponents’ skill levels.

As for the character customization, you can use one of the many preset minifigures from LEGO’s vast collection. You can also use the Custom Creator to mix and match parts to create an unique minifigure to use in game. Lastly, there’s a Minifigure Shop that you use carrots to unlock. There are over 100 to unlock and they cost 500-800 carrots each.

To earn carrots, you level up by playing though each of the Challenge Zones. In addition to the carrots, you can also unlock additional minifigures every couple of levels. There are 26 levels per zone and it requires 20,000 XP to unlock everything.

As you play through the game, you will also earn XP and that allows you to unlock more minifigures. Each level gives you one and at level 100, you can unlock Mr. Gold.

The main gameplay is inside the Challenge Zones where you make your way around the themed board. You roll a number to see where you end up around the board. You can either earn studs or even free Gold Bricks while also buying power ups. Since the objective is to earn the most Gold Bricks, you’ll have to find ways to obtain them around the board. There are event quests that you can do to earn the bricks or you can steal them from other players.

Overall, LEGO Party! seems to be a fun alternative to the party game genre and there’s enough content to keep you occupied for a while. I’ve played through two full Challenge Zones and haven’t played any duplicate minigames. If you’re a completionist, there’s plenty of gaming to reach the max levels to unlock everything.

LEGO Party! is now available on Steam, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox.
