LEGO has officially announced the LEGO SMART Brick at their first-ever CES event. LEGO’s Chief Product & Marketing Officer, Julia Goldin, was on hand to reveal the SMART Brick which is the size of a 2×4 LEGO brick. The system consists of the brick, the tag, and the minifigure. There’s a chip inside the brick that is smaller than the LEGO stud. The platform that the SMART Bricks is used on is called Smart Play.

The SMART tag and minifigure has codes inside that defines the behaviors. The SMART Brick has a tiny speaker as well lights and sounds and can also sense a SMART minifigure. The bricks can form a decentralized network so they can talk to each other when they’re close. In addition, the SMART Bricks have spatial awareness and know where they are stacked in a three dimensional space.

The first theme that LEGO will be using the SMART Brick on is LEGO Star Wars. Three new sets have been revealed to use it.
