For our next review of the LEGO Wicked sets, we take a look at one of the two more adult oriented sets with the Glinda & Elphaba Bookends (75691). The set has 1,327 pieces and retails for $129.99.
Minifigures
Unlike the other Wicked sets, this one actually comes with minifigures of Glinda, Elphaba, Madame Morrible, Fiyero, Pfannee, and the Wizard. Glinda has on a rather boring pink dress. Unlike the minidolls, there’s no metallic printing on it. She does have the four-wide dress piece which is better than regular legs. The double-sided head shows her with a content look on one side and a smile on the other. Her accessory is the trans-clear wand.
Elphaba also has a more generic black dress with purple detailing. Although we’ve had the Wicked Witch before in previous LEGO sets, this one has a more darker green skin tone that matches with the minidolls. Her double-sided head shows her with a smile on one side and a smirk on the other. Her accessories include her broom and a more detailed Grimmerie.
Madame Morrible is now wearing a dark blue dress with metallic gold details on both sides of the torso as well as on the dress piece. She has a double-sided head that shows a regular smile on one side and a more evil smile on the other.
Fiyero is shown wearing a dark blue vest with some tan pants. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and a sad expression on the other. His accessories includes a lantern and a rose.
Pfannee has on a dark blue jacket with some lighter blue and orange on the seams. His double-sided head shows him with a sinister smile on one side and an angry expression on the other. His accessories include a couple of butterflies.
Lastly we have the Wizard who wears a mostly dark green suit with some lighter green shades for his pants. He only has a single-sided head showing him with a gray mustache and a smile. A dark green top hat completes his look.
Build
The whole build consists of both sides of the bookends, one for Glinda and the other for Elphaba. Glinda’s bookend has a more brighter color scheme which is the norm for the Wicked sets. The front of the build has couple of brick-built books which include The Historie of Oz and Glinda’s diary with a metallic gold lock. On top of the diary is a brick-built butterfly and a white flower. A hidden feature here is that you can pull of the diary to put two minifigures inside.
Behind the book stack is a vase that has a couple of tulips from Munchkinland.
The backdrop is Glinda’s book of Oz and the backside of it shows a facade of Shiz University with enough space for the Glinda minifigure can stand in.
For Elphaba’s bookend, we have a more green color scheme to represent Emerald City’s colors. The front has a large Grimmerie build that can open up to reveal some minifigure sleeping areas.
The top of the Grimmerie has Elphaba’s blue flower as well as a minibuild of the Emerald City train. Behind the train is a green elixer bottle that uses a lot of transparent-green pieces to make it look like a glass bottle.
Lastly we have Elphaba’s green book that has the Wicked symbol built on the cover. The back side of the book as a facade of Emerald City which also has a dedicated spot for Elphaba to stand on.
The insides of Shiz University and Emerald City do not protrude out which allows you to put actual books against them without worrying about anything popping off. The Glinda and Elphaba minifigures can also stand inside but you have to remove their accessories for that to happen. The bottoms of the bookends have rubber pieces to keep them from sliding around.
Result
Overall the Glinda & Elphaba Bookends (75691) is a nice addition to the LEGO Wicked For Good wave that caters to the more grown up audience. Both bookends are detailed enough with various references and the hidden features are, more than anything, storage areas for some of the minifigures. I also do appreciate that the set uses minifigures instead of minidolls. The one downside I have is that the price point of the set seems just a tad high. For that price, I thought the bookends would be a little bigger.
