The LEGO Marketing department has given an explanation of the Ultimate Collector’s Series seal on the new LEGO Star Wars Sandcrawler (75059).
“The decision has been made to change the packaging for future “LEGO exclusive” Star Wars sets to include the UCS seal and de-link from the core Star Wars packaging. In addition to the packaging change an update has been made to the building instructions. The building instructions will have additional pages detailing the model’s connection to the movie and its development process. Much as the Creator Expert badge differentiates the larger models from the core assortment the goal of this change is to better communicate to builders that these sets represent our biggest building challenge in the LEGO Star Wars theme.”

Interesting to say the least, I am a huge fan of this change, as the “STAR WARS” logo is in the original Golden letters that I am just simply a fan of. Wouldn’t mind seeing this change in all sets to be honest, but that’s a fairly large stretch. Glad to see the Sandcrawler remade at all, and the price and piece count is just simply awesome (I’ll be using that adjective to describe any Lego product now due to that movie haha). Sad to say, but I’ve pretty much completed my Lego Star Wars collection, not a full collection, but I’ve gotten all, if not most, of the sets I’ve wanted. I’m only looking forward to only two sets from the Summer wave of SW, and these UCS models may become the only sets I eventually do buy, so I am glad that we are getting something a bit special for the set. Reminds me of the CUUSOO sets in how we’ld get a little back story of the design and what part it played in where it originated from.
As if the price alone didn’t convey the fact that this set is bigger and more challenging than let’s say, a microfighter…
i agree with Bricks on the Dollar…..even though its not exactly what was said…a microfighter sand crawler would be aces! (not to mention an inexpensive way to get a jawa)
I think the real reason for the change is that epic UCS type sets (Death Star/Super Star Destroyer/R2-D2/B-Wing/X-Wing/Ewok Village.Millenium Falcon even) last on shelves a lot longer than the usual 1.5-2.5 year shelf time TLG plans for SW sets. When I go to the Lego Store I see mostly green boxes with Yoda, now a nice swath of the black & red with Vader from the brand new sets then the old boxes for all the big sets, look at the top corner and see another version of Vader, a Clone, Darth Maul, and Yoda on all the big sets. It makes consumers wonder why the showpiece sets are in differnt boxes that tie in to older things, and theoretically makes it harder to sell. I’d actually be fine with continually redoing the boxes each year, mostly for the joy in seeing some people buy another of each of these big sets just to have every version)
