BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational Officially Begins

LEGO has officially kicked off the BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational where you can see the rejected LEGO Ideas 10k projects that are being considered to be released on the BrickLink platform. There are 27 members who have agreed to accept the invitation and there are 31 projects to be considered. Projects that are IP-based were not invited to participate.

The designs are currently in the pre-production phase and the designers will have to meet the program requirements and pass the test building before May 31 to be considered for crowdfunding. Once the projects reach this phase, the first 13 to reach the crowdfunding goal will become BrickLink Designer Program sets. The projects that don’t hit the goal will be sold as digital building instructions only.

KICKING OFF THE BRICKLINK DESIGNER PROGRAM: 2021 INVITATIONAL

Today we’re excited to share the next steps in the collaboration between LEGO Ideas and BrickLink via the BrickLink Designer Program: 2021 Invitational.

As communicated in December 2020, we planned to invite a selection of LEGO Ideas members and their 10K Club submissions to participate in the pilot program, the purpose being to realize more of the amazing fan designs that are submitted to LEGO Ideas.

The result has been that 27 members have agreed to participate with 31 10K Club projects. We’re thrilled at the response we got from the invited members with almost 100% of the invited members deciding to accept our invitation.

The designers are already very busy at work on their designs in the “pre-production” phase. In

LEGO Ideas Winnie the Pooh (21326) Release Delayed

For those who are excited to pick up the LEGO Ideas Winnie the Pooh (21326) when it goes live on March 18, we’ve been told that the set will be delayed a bit on release day. Normally, new sets go live at midnight EST/9pm PST here in North America but it will be delayed for one hour for some reason. Just be prepared when you don’t see it going live at the normal scheduled time as it affects all time zones around the world. We already seen something similar happen with the Easter Bunny’s Carrot House (40449) promo when it didn’t go live until five hours after it was supposed to, at least in NA.

Update: Someone mentioned this and I think this is the reason. Delaying the release essentially means that you won’t be able to double up on the Amelia Earhart Tribute and the Easter Bunny Carrot House promotions online, even if it was a small window to get both.

LEGO Accepting Backorders for Spring Lantern Festival (80107) on LEGO Shop

LEGO is now accepting backorders on the LEGO Spring Lantern Festival (80107). The set has been highly popular and has been temporarily sold out since its release at the beginning of the year. It retails for $119.99 and it will ship in 60 days. If you decide to get it, your order also qualifies you for the Amelia Earhart Tribute (40450) as well as the Easter Bunny’s Carrot House (40449). The Story of Nian (80106) is also accepting backorders but it’ll only get you the Carrot House if you just buy that.

Toys R Us Making Another Comeback

It looks like Toys R Us will be making another comeback this year as CNBC is reporting that WHP Global has acquired Tru Kids, the parent company of Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and Geoffrey the Giraffe brands. It’s actually been three years since Toys R Us closed but they are planning to open stores again ahead of the holiday season. I’m not really counting the two pop-up stores that opened in Texas and New Jersey in 2019 which also closed down in January due to COVID-19. It was reported that that the new stores will be in various formats including flagships, pop-ups, airport locations and mini stores inside other retailers. There’s no word yet on how many locations will be opening at the start.

Hopefully the new owners will be able to pick up the piece of what Toys R Us used to be. If you’re new to The Brick Fan, many of you don’t know that I used to work at TRU right when this site was in its infant stages and I used to stock the LEGO aisle at my store. I eventually got transferred to Babies R Us and I stayed there until everything closed back in 2018 here in the US. There are still many TRU stores open around the world which still have LEGO exclusives, mainly in the Asian countries. Hopefully TRU and LEGO can continue their partnership once stores are running smoothly.
