In celebration of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Mel Caddick, the LEGO® designer behind our cool new Amelia Earhart Tribute set!

Question: How would you describe Amelia Earhart? What does she represent to you?

Answer: Amelia Earhart was a great icon, a pioneer and an author. As the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic, she was clearly very adventurous and determined and I think her story inspires anyone who wishes to pursue their dreams.

Amelia Earhart taught us that passions, aspirations and courage know no gender – a legacy not passed on by many, and for that I think we found the perfect personality to celebrate for 2021 International Women’s Day.

Question: What inspired you to create this model?

Answer: We were inspired by Amelia Earhart’s groundbreaking achievement of being the first woman to do a Transatlantic solo flight. The red Lockheed 5B Vega was the plane in 1932 that she used to cross the Atlantic alone. Naturally, this was the perfect model to represent her achievements.

Question: What did you want people to

San Diego Comic Con Postponed Until 2022

San Diego Comic Con has just announced that in-person SDCC 2021 will be officially postponed until 2022. Although vaccines for COVID-19 has been rolling out, they stated that the July date will still be too early to hold in-person events, however, there will be a free three-day online experience from July 23-25. There’s no doubt that companies will also be doing their own events around that time as well. CCI is also planning some sort of smaller three-day in-person convention in November. Let’s see how that works out.

LEGO didn’t do any panels last year for SDCC but did release some exclusive sets and minifigures that were planned for it. It’s still too early to know if LEGO will be doing any online events or if they will have any exclusives they will be selling at various retailers.

New LEGO Disney 2021 Sets Coming Soon

Brickset has recently updated their database for some upcoming LEGO sets and it looks like there’s some sort of Disney themed line coming soon. There are four sets listed which are:

• Mickey Mouse Propeller Plane (10772) – 59 pieces
• The Minnie Mouse Ice Cream Shop (10773) – 100 pieces
• The Space Rocket Of Mickey And Minnie (10774) – 88 pieces
• Fire Station And Fire Truck Of Mickey Mouse And His Friends (10776) – 144 pieces

The sets are obviously translated and the numbering on the sets seem to suggest DUPLO or 4+ but have been talk of it being a minifigure scale theme. Judging by the piece count, it could be the former. Do you think we’ll ever see a minifigure scale Disney line besides the two waves of Collectible Minifigures?
