The LEGO Batman Movie The Ultimate Batmobile

Market Watch has revealed The LEGO Batman Movie set coming out on June 1 called The Ultimate Batmobile (70917). The set will retail for $129.99 and contain eight minifigures including Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Polka-Dot Man, Alfred Pennyworth (in Batsuit), Wicked Witch of the West, and two Flying Monkeys.

The Batmobile itself divides into four different vehicles, the Batmobile, Batwing, Bat-Tank and Batcycle. There’s also a rotating Bat-Signal with a light brick.

Well, shoot, who needs to save for retirement?

Also, I guess this marks the first appearance of a Dimensions exclusive character in a non-Dimensions set.

I believe Dr. Who came out in November of 2015 and his set in December

      • The Anonymous Hutt

He did, but in the official set he had a purple suit. In the Dimensions pack, he has the 12th Doctor’s normal blue suit.

So the Dimensions figure is still technically exclusive.

Well I think this set has a different cape so technically the Dimensions figure is still exclusive.

          • The Anonymous Hutt

How can tell if it is a different cape? Both figures have normal black capes. The only difference there could possibly be is the fabric material.

          • David4

I don’t know, looks like the new, better type. But for all we know she can have very slightly different printing, we won’t know until June 1.

There’s no reason to give her different printing on the body. This isn’t a case like the S1 Clown design being reused in a yellow-box set where the print got noticeably resized. Both the Dimensions pack Witch and the Batmobile Witch are likely to be printed in the same facility. Zooming in on the picture doesn’t reveal any noticeable differences in the face, either, but it’s always possible that they’ll swap in a new face print before heading into production.

And while some colors can be easy to tell apart, others are very difficult. Blue is almost impossible to tell apart in person or in photos. Black definitely has a distinct shade difference in person, but not enough to stand out in photos, especially if they were professionally ‘shopped to make them look more appealing. This is a promotional image for a major product launch, so assume it was edited.

As for these particular capes, Alfred’s has a nice side profile on one of the tips, and definitely looks spongy-thick. LBM Batman has _always_ been given a spongy cape, and again the tips look a little too thick to be a starched cape. I’m less sure now about the Witch. There’s a bit of the neck ring sticking up over her left shoulder that looks too thin to be a spongy cape, but I just realized her neck is pretty much entirely obscured by the cape material. Starched capes lie perfectly flat in front, where spongy capes tend to curl upwards once you press the head down into the material. Even without the benefit of professional lighting, the neck on my Dimensions Witch is clearly visible and stands out really well against the black of her outfit.

The print on all three components looks unchanged from the Dimensions minifig, the head/hands look like the same shade of green, and zooming in really closely it looks like, at least for this artwork, she has a starched cape. That’s not to say she won’t get the spongy cape when it comes time for the set to be released, but because they’re still making capes in both materials it’s impossible to say. The ironic thing is, the spongy capes were made to go with the Super Jumper pieces, but while the latter appear to have been dropped (I’ve opened most of the LBM sets at this point), the spongy cape is still more common for superheroes. I’m still of mixed feelings about it, too. For a minifig lineup, the starched capes still look better because the material is thinner and sits flat around the neck post. For action displays, the spongy cape can actually be posed more dynamically than you could ever pull off with a starched cape, and it’s been noted many times that starched capes can be mangled by body wear or hair that hangs down around the torso while a spongy cape will just shrug it off like nothing.

The Dimensions deal may have been kicked off by the Ideas project anyways. I believe the only _characters_ that have been unique to Dimensions from Year One were Chell, the Wicked Witch, the Cyberman, the Midway Gamer, and Stay Puft (I count at least 14 more that are now on sale from Year 2). As for actual minifigs, quite a few of them are unique. Slimer is a different color, The Doctor has a completely unique outfit, Venkman and Doc Brown have new hair, and a lot of the other minifigs have new faces. Even in cases where all the parts are common (like Batman), Dimensions may be the only source for that specific combination of parts (like Batman). Currently, Bricklink has 38 minifigs through Wave 6 listed under the Dimensions category, meaning that’s where the minifig showed up first, and of those I count 19 that are nothing but new face prints and/or different hair/hats. I’m not counting Slimer in that because he’s also a different color of plastic, and Scooby-Doo isn’t even listed with them at all because he’s classified as an animal rather than a minifig (but he also has unique face print). I don’t yet have the LBM Starter, so I don’t know if the minifigs in that are any different from what’s in the retail sets, but obviously Michael Knight is a completely unique character and Excalibur Batman is almost certain to remain a unique minifig.

That’s actually pretty nice and the price is a lot better than some of the other sets in the series!

I don’t know why it says Direct-to-consumer on this post. This isn’t the D2C set that’s exclusive to Lego Stores.

    • chewymurphy

      I believe it is a D2C actually

      • Penkid11

If it were D2C, a press release the size of the Assembly Square’s would be posted up directly from Lego (hence the name DIRECT to Consumer) and feature the pricing for all major regions Lego produces for as well as a designer video.

This announcement is from a random news source, and is a set that falls into the “flagship” set range (biggest set of the year similar to Jestro’s Volcano Lair and Samurai X Cave Chaos).

        Believe what you want though.

        • chewymurphy

Check Lego’s Facebook page. It was officially revealed 😉

          • Penkid11

            As a set. Yes.

Not a D2C. Heck Tormentalous even removed “D2C” in the post above to halt confusion.

Again no press releases. No design video.

          • chewymurphy

Not yet at least. It’s too far out. Lego never posted a single picture or announcement for the X Cave or Jestro’s Lair because those were part of a wave. If I had to guess, this would be a VIP early set in mid-May.

          • Penkid11

That would be because Nexo Knights nor Ninjago (at the time) had no where near the amount of publicity as TLBM has now.

Also the launch date says June 1st. If there was early access it would have been announced. However Lego doesn’t announce their D2C sets three months in advance. Never have, and to avoid the clone brands, never will.

I’ve seen these launches come and go for nearly 18 years of being a Lego fan. This is a retail set. Whether exclusive to a specific store or not, it’s still not a D2C set.

If it were a D2C set it would have the a part of the Creator Expert line, or $200+. This set is neither.

But again, believe what you want for now.

    • David4

And you would know this how?

  4. The Anonymous Hutt

I’m afraid to know why the Wicked Witch is in this set. But, in your review you didn’t mention any dimensions advertising, so I assume everything was fine in the actual movie?

    • Richard Casey

She’s in the movie. Along with a bunch of other surprises.

    • myscrnnm

She’s in the movie, but it’s not really Dimensions advertising. Just a bunch of licenses that LEGO has acquired over the years plus traditional pop culture villains.

  5. Vaughn Baskin

    WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Redhood5

    Is Alfred holding two katanas?

    • NRD1138

I see Alfred and I think ‘Green Hornet’s Kato’

  7. Darrell

Having just come back from seeing the movie, I am pleased to see that Alfred minifigure. I was hoping they would make that version of him.
