The LEGO Group has been sued by a patent company, May Patents Ltd., that alleges LEGO SMART Play infringes on three of its patents. According to Bloomberg, the patents in question are US Patent Nos. 11,192,002, 12,095,277, and 12,288,992 and they state that the LEGO SMART Brick and charger have similar features as the patented items including the accelerometer to produce an output signal and a visual display to give information to the user.
May Patent also allege that LEGO knew about the patents before SMART Play launched back in March and are looking for damages. Note that May Patents Ltd. is considered a Non-Practicing Entity (NPE) which is commonly known as patent trolls. They acquire patents not to manufacture products but to file lawsuits to get licensing fees and/or settlements.
