Project Swapfig Round 2 – Fight!

Back in April, we did a post promoting Project Swapfig on Kickstarter. The project was started by Drew Maughan, aka SilentMode, to help bridge the gap for minifigure traders. The site allows people to trade away their unwanted LEGO minifigures for ones they want or need. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter project didn’t meet its goal.

Fast forward to today, Drew has decided to start another crowdfunding campaign for Project Swapfig but this time, it is on Zequs. Some differences from the original Kickstarter project is that the target is at £1500 instead of £3000 and has a longer duration. One thing that is similar is that there are certain rewards that you can get for pledging a certain amount. Head over to Zequs to see what Drew has to offer including a Gold SwapFigure.

Brick Owl Hit With Cease and Desist Letter From BrickLink

Back in the early part of June, BrickLink was sold to the founder of Korean game company Nexon, Jung-Ju Kim. At the end of the same month, Brick Owl officially opened as another LEGO trading platform. Since the announcement, there hasn’t been any concrete updates for the upcoming BrickLink 2.0. Yesterday, Brick Owl announced that they have received a Cease and Desist letter from BrickLink and were demanded to immediately cease providing their services altogether. This includes using BrickLink’s unique numbering and naming systems as well as the sync feature which extracts data from BrickLink to display on Brick Owl. To me, this pretty much sounds like BrickLink is claiming the exclusive rights to all their data including the naming and numbering system and wants Brick Owl to shut down completely.

However, to counter the C&D letter, Brick Owl will be implementing some changes to their site which includes, removing BrickLink names and numbers from the site. The BrickLink Sync feature also will be disabled on September 28th.

There have been many discussions on whether BrickLink’s catalog was free to use without restrictions but it looks like a corporate giant is putting their proverbial foot down on competitors even though they encouraged competition as they stated on their TOS changes. Keep up with all the happenings over on Brick Owl here.

Official LEGO Documentary Coming in 2014

Today, Deadline has revealed that The LEGO Group in conjunction with Global Emerging Markets (GEM) will be creating an official feature-length documentary film called Beyond The Brick: A LEGO Brickumentary. They have partnered up with Oscar-winner Daniel Junge (Saving Face) and Oscar-nominated Kief Davidson (Open Heart) to shoot a film to take a deeper look into the company and the impact of the bricks on today’s culture, art, and education. The documentary will also take a look at not only younger builders, but Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs), LEGO convention attendees, artists, and famous LEGO fans too. Brendan Kiernan and Justin Moore-Lewy will be producing the documentary and is slated to be released early 2014.

LEGO bricks are everywhere, and this documentary is an examination of their footprint in our global community. The LEGO brick has transcended language, politics, age, race, art, science and technology – all through its ability to draw out the basic human need to create and share. – Jill Wilfert, VP of Licensing and Entertainment for The LEGO Group

A few years ago, there was a very well made short video called AFOL: A Blocumentary that takes a look into the world of a couple of AFOLs from the Pacific Northwest. You can watch that video below.

LEGO Store Employee (5001622)

The Brick Owl has reported a new LEGO Store Employee (5001622) promotional polybag which includes LEGO Retail Store mascot, Tom, dressed in black with a red 2×4 brick. There’s no word on how we will be able to get the polybag but Brick Owl suggests it might be for purchases of a certain dollar amount. Do any of my LEGO employee friends know anything about this polybag? If so, feel free to comment. Also one more thing. Where is the yellow apron?!?
