The LEGO Movie Sequel Script to be Rewritten

There has been many changes going on for The LEGO Movie Sequel in the past few months. Last month, it was reported that the movie was pushed back a second time to February 2, 2019 from the original release date of May 26, 2017. Variety is now reporting that Warner Bros. has hired Raphael Bob-Waksberg to rewrite the script for the movie. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller being busy with other projects, the studio went in another direction for the writing.

Although it’s not that unusual for movies to be rewritten this early in production, it does seem a little worrisome that there are so many changes announced for The LEGO Movie Sequel so far. Hopefully these changes are for the best.

The LEGO Movie 2 Release Date Pushed Back to 2019

Late night news coming out of Deadline.com is that The LEGO Movie 2 has been pushed back to February 2, 2019. This is the second time the sequel to the highly popular movie has been pushed back with the original release date of May 26, 2017, then to May 18, 2018. There was no reason why Warner Bros. decided to move the movie back along with a couple of other ones but we still have The LEGO Batman Movie and the LEGO Ninjago movie to look forward to in 2017.

Doctor Who To Make Appearance in The LEGO Movie 2?

LEGO Dimensions Doctor Who

Doctor Who has made an immediate impact in the LEGO world this year with its appearance in LEGO Dimensions and in the upcoming LEGO Ideas (21304) set. io9 is reporting that Warner Bros. is in negotiations with BBC for the Doctor to make an appearance in The LEGO Movie 2.

Director Rob Schrab dropped that teaseer on the Harmontown Podcast but that was pretty much it. Although there wasn’t more information about this, it sounds like the Doctor will be making a cameo appearance like Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando did in the first movie.

The LEGO Movie 2 won’t be out until 2018 so there’s still a few years to see if he will actually be in the movie or not. Who knows, maybe we’ll see some other collaboration between LEGO and Doctor Who between then.

Emmet and Wyldstyle Returning for The LEGO Movie 2

Various tidbids of The LEGO Movie 2 have been coming out slowly but we now have some big information on some of the characters that will be in it. In an interview with Zap2It, Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed that Emmet will be returning to the sequel along with Wyldstyle which will take place four years after the events of the first movie.

“It picks up where the other one left off,” Lord said. Miller also added, “Emmet and Wyldstyle will be back, and others and there will be new characters as well.”

Given those statements, there’s no mentioning whether Chris Pratt or Elizabeth Banks will be returning to voice The LEGO Movie 2. Hopefully they will be able to return to give the storyline some sort of continuity as we’ve grown to know and love the voices of Emmet and Wyldstyle.

The LEGO Movie 2 will be directed by Rob Schrab with Lord and Miller producing and will be released sometime in 2018.

Rob Schrab Directing The LEGO Movie 2

The LEGO Movie 2 now has a director in writer, producer and TV director, Rob Schrab. He has directed various TV shows including The Sarah Silverman Program and episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, and The Mindy Project but The LEGO Movie sequel will be the first time he will be directing on the big screen. The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Pictures President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Greg Silverman.

If you’ve seen Rob’s work, you know that he’s a very talented director and he is an exceptionally good choice to direct the movie. Rob has also worked as a writer on the Oscar-nominated animated film Monster House so hopefully the sequel will finally get to shine and not get snubbed like the first movie.

Earlier this month, we reported that the movie will be set four years after the first one and will be introducing more female characters including Emmet’s sister.

More The LEGO Movie 2 Details Including Introduction of…

In a Q&A session at the Santa Barbara Film Festival where The LEGO Movie was screened earlier this week, Chris Miller and Phil Lord gave a small tidbid of what will happen in The LEGO Movie 2. They mentioned that the sequel will be a few years after the events of the first movie (four years to be exact) and will “focus Emmet and his sister in a ‘weird, dystopian version of Bricksburg.'” Yes, you read that right. Emmet has a sister! We reported that the sequel will be featuring more female characters so Emmet’s sister is confirmed to be one of these characters. The release of The LEGO Movie 2 won’t be happening for another three years in 2018 with the LEGO Ninjago and LEGO Batman movies premiering before it so there’s still a lot more stuff we can expect to hear about in the next few years.

Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, a few days ago Screen Junkies has released a hilarious Honest Trailer for The LEGO Movie which you can check out below.

The LEGO Movie 2 Will Feature More Female Characters

BBC is reporting that The LEGO Movie 2 will be featuring more female characters. According to Phil Lord and Christoper Miller during the interview, Miller stated: “I don’t want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff.”

Before we get into the whole gender issue thing again, for me it doesn’t really matter who’s featured more as long as there is a good balance between all the characters and how well the story comes out as a result. LEGO has been under some scrutiny the past couple of years regarding this issue but I feel the company has been handling it pretty well.

There’s not release date announced for The LEGO Movie 2 but it’s possible that it will be on May 25, 2018 since it was pushed back.
