LEGO Creative Storybook (40291)

In just a few short days, LEGO will be rolling out a new limited edition promotional item called the Creative Storybook (40291). It consists of 307 pieces and you can get it for free with a purchase of $99 or more at LEGO Brand Stores and on Shop@Home from June 4-20, while supplies last. This looks to be a pretty fun looking set so let’s take an in-depth look at it and see how it is.

Instruction Booklet

The instructions are made with a thicker stock of paper which was unexpected for a set this size. The most interesting thing to point out here are the first few pages where it shows some of Han Christian Andersen’s short stories in a timeline that are built using LEGO bricks. There is a disclaimer that states the models shown off cannot be built with the pieces from this set and are not available for purchase. The images are nicely detailed so you can recreate the builds using parts in your collection.

Minifigures

There are two minifigures in this set, Hans Christian Andersen and a young boy. Andersen is dressed in a black vest with some blue detailing for the tie, buttons, and pockets. He has a normal smiling expression for the head and a black top hat complets the look. His accessories include a quill and a book with a printed 1×2 tile that says “Once upon a time.”

The boy has nothing too interesting about him. He wears a blue hoodie over a striped green shirt with short legs. His head shows him smiling with freckles and has long wavy hair. His accessory is a pretzel.

Build

The most captivating part of this set is obviously the miniature pop-up book itself. It’s a very unique looking set that we haven’t seen before. The cover for the book is brown while the corner protectors are flame yellow orange. The other side of the book is probably the worst looking part of the set because of the exposed backs of the LEGO parts. It’s just ugly but thankfully, it isn’t the point of focus.

The pages of the book are on hinges to sort of stabilize the set due to the spine being more raised than the covers themselves. The left page shows a green bench and street light sitting on top of a cobblestone street which uses various colored round tiles. In the front, there’s a printed 1×8 tile with Han Christian Andersen’s name.

On the other page, it shows a scene from one of Andersen’s most popular short stories, The Ugly Duckling. The build shows a small lake with some grass on the side. There’s also a small flower sitting on top of a lilypad. Least but not last, we have the white swan. The thing that bugs me a little is that the neck area seems a bit off with the 1×3 plate.

Results

Overall the LEGO Creative Storybook (40291) is a very nice concept that is a welcome addition. I do like the overall aesthetics of it, minus the book cover and the disproportionate swan neck. I will also note that the book does not close up as it is impossible due to the size of the set. As I mentioned before, this set could be a teaser to the winner of the Third 2017 LEGO Ideas Review Stage, the Pop-Up Book, which we’ll be getting later this year. Again, you can get it for free with a purchase of $99 or more at LEGO Brand Stores and on Shop@Home from June 4-20, while supplies last.
