LEGO Ideas NASA Saturn-V Launch Umbilical Tower Achieves 10,000 Supporters

The NASA Saturn-V Launch Umbilical Tower by whatsuptoday is the latest project to hit 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas. Continuing on the Space project hype, it is supposed to be an add-on to the LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V (21309) consisting of about 2,998 pieces.

It now joins Gilmore Girls – Luke’s Diner, Wonders of Peru, NF-15B Research Aircraft, I Am Your Father, and NASA Space Shuttle as the projects to reach the Second 2017 Review Stage.

I dont think that LEGO would approve this one – one point above all: IF you dont have Saturn V to attach to it – its virtually useless and nothing special to look at. id like the Space Shuttle to have and be produced instead.

That’s one of the main reasons. The other being that LEGO will not select an Ideas submission that is part of the same license that they are currently making (eg. Star Wars and Ghostbusters), hence why none of the Ghostbusters Firehouse submissions were chosen despite them coming out with their own iteration later on. In fact, a cursory glance of the official guidelines reveals:

“For projects related to NASA, we consider the property to be the specific program or mission. For example, we will no longer consider projects related to the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, or the Apollo program as potential LEGO Ideas sets.”

And wasn’t there also a rule saying that submissions could not be a supplement to another set? Or perhaps that was just something that was thrown around as a suggestion?

I thought that too, but then Valerie Roche told me on twitter “We’ve worked with LEGO Ideas for the submission. We felt that it would be a great way to display the rocket.”

Guess there’s an exception for every rule!

I just like how everybody’s (quoting that paragraph from the LEGO IDEAS site) fail to quote it COMPLETELY: 2nd paragraphs refers to the Shuttle, which entered the Ideas program before the Editors note:

For projects related to NASA, we consider the property to be the specific program or mission. For example, we will no longer consider projects related to the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, or the Apollo program as potential LEGO Ideas sets.

Editor’s Note: This Guideline was added April 05, 2017 and affects projects submitted after this date. Existing projects based on current LEGO licenses have a smaller chance of passing the LEGO Review than other projects and may have increased risk of overlapping a product currently in development.
