The NASA Space Shuttle (Saturn V Scale) by KingsKnight is the latest project to achieve 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas. Continuing with the hype of space type projects on LEGO Ideas, the project is a representation of the Space Shuttle Endeavour. It proposed the shuttle itself along with the rocket boosters and the external tank which are both removable. It also has the robotic arm that comes out of the shuttle as well. The set is built to the same scale as the LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V (21309).

The NASA Space Shuttle now joins Gilmore Girls – Luke’s Diner, Wonders of Peru, NF-15B Research Aircraft, and I Am Your Father as the projects to reach the Second 2017 Review Stage.

I really hope this gets the go-ahead from LEGO.
Congrats on achieving the support, but why would LEGO want to basically re-issue a set they’ve already released at least once, on almost the same scale? I mean, even the main booster rocket looks to be similar to the ~2011 model, right down to the nosecone design.
ask everyone who’s gonna buy the new UCS Falcon in the third quarter of this year
Quite different situation. That’s a major redesign of a set that was last released — on that scale — more than a decade ago, and has significantly more elements. Thus the much higher price point. (That said, I ain’t buying it!)
I still wish we could have a Mon Cal Cruiser UCS, but a guy can dream
Similarly, it could be 8 or 9 years between the Shuttle set you’re referring to and this one (if it even passes review).
I assure you it’s a completely different build (I also own the Expedition). You’ll see a couple similar elements (like that External Tank piece you’re referring to), but those are superficial similarities. Also the scale of the 2011 set is off. The External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters are too small for the orbiter. It’s also not to scale with the Saturn V, and doesn’t have the same accuracy that we see in the Saturn V set. It may not pass review, but I can at least say that much.
After the saturn, there is no chance of another space themed set that soon.
No reason it couldn’t follow on from Saturn V once that ceases in late 2018. An early ’19 release would then be a more significant gap from the Shuttle Adventure. I don’t think one, acurate, NASA themed set every 18 months is too much to ask or expect.
They’re obviously very popular and therefore profitable.
I think they’re speaking more to the point of Lego’s 0 tolerance policy for sets that involve existing licenses. That being said, I don’t know how licensing works for NASA because it’s a government entity and may not fall under traditional law or regulation. It’s good to note that many years ago, Lego released multiple NASA based sets but still approved and released the Saturn V.
NASA ideas are treated a little differently: “For projects related to NASA, we consider the property to be the specific program or mission. For example, we will no longer consider projects related to the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, or the Apollo program as potential LEGO Ideas sets.” In this case, the “mission” is the California Science Center exhibit opening in 2019, where they’ll set up the full stack in its vertical configuration. Might not pass review, but it falls within guidelines.
Sadly, I guess that means we’re unlikely to get a larger scale international space station since Lego already released a small one years ago.
I’ll stick my Expedition if this thing gets made. That sets is good enough for me if not better than this one. That specialized front turns me off from this design.
You do realize that this would not be the final design if this gets made right?
