The Rolling BB-8 project by mjsmiley is the latest one to get 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas. The project is based on the new fan favorite droid and it is able to actually roll. The model uses only official LEGO parts including the Star Wars Planet shells as the body. The head is able to stay upright with magnets. The project also proposes a base station that is able to show the rolling ability with a crank.
The Rolling BB-8 now joins a plethera of projects that qualify for the First 2016 Review Stage including the Fossil Museum, the Gingerbread House, the Modular Train Station, the Old Fishing Store, the Jedi High Council, and Particle Accelerator, and the Jurassic Park Visitor Center.

Those style of magnets have been banned by the EU and will never be used in a LEGO set again.
Why are magnets banned?
Kids swallow them and it pinches their intestines causing all kinds of issues, including death.
Children eat them. It’s why LEGO redid the train magnets to be one huge piece that children won’t be able to swallow.
Good thing the site is called Lego Ideas and not Lego Finished Products. If Lego really likes the idea, they could easily make a magnet piece that can’t be swallowed and suits the need of this set, just like they did with the train magnets.
LEGO has repeatedly said they will not make a new mold for an Ideas set. So unless they can get the train magnets to work this set isn’t happening.
Even without the magnets I doubt it would get made. However they did make the maze set.
Ignoring the fact that this will never be approved by Lego simply due to its license, this model looks fairly cheap due to its use of the planet shells
It would be wise of Lego to figure out a way to incorporate Ideas projects into their agreement with LucasFilm. We are seeing much more creative concepts and designs for Star Wars Lego from the user community than from Lego itself (Assault on Hoth, the laziness of the entire summer 2016 line, as examples).
While I very much agree with the idea that LEGO Star Wars, as well as other franchises, and Ideas should work together, could you please explain what makes the summer 2016 line lazy?
Another variant on the AT-TE (third in 10 years), another A-Wing after only a couple of years. Another TIE Advanced. Another Turbo tank. Another TFA X-Wing. Only one completely original TFA set (Jakku). Evidence enough?
Fair enough. I commented a while back that its been a while since we’ve had a TIE Bomber or TIE Interceptor. I don’t mind the A-Wing since I’m trying to build my OT armies. I also wonder if they’ll recirculate TCW.
I would definitely go for a TIE Bomber and Interceptor without the blue highlights!!!
I currently have a TIE fighter, X1, X1 prototype, and even a defender, but no bomber or Interceptor.
Sure! Another variant on the AT-TE (third in 10 years), another A-Wing after only a couple of years. Another TIE Advanced. Another Turbo tank. Another TFA X-Wing. Only one completely original TFA set (Jakku). Evidence enough?
