LEGO Seasonal Nutcracker (40254) Review

LEGO Seasonal Nutcracker (40254)

During Black Friday or as LEGO calls it, Brick Friday, there will be a promotion for the limited edition LEGO Seasonal Nutcracker (40254). It consists of 230 pieces and you can get it for free November 24-27 with a purchase of $99 or more or if you’re a LEGO VIP member, you can get it a week earlier from November 18-19.

The build has the look of your typical toy soldier nutcracker but in brick form. It stands on a generic 6×6 base. I do like the use of the 1×2 palisade bricks to give some detailing on the base. The legs are just stacks of 2×2 round bricks with a pin in the middle to give it stability.

One of the more interesting things on the nutcracker are the body and the head. The middle of the body has a hole where the lever to crack the nut goes. The front of the body uses some 1×1 pearl-gold round tiles as the buttons and some 1×2 jumper plates for the collar. The arms can not move a full 360 degrees as it blocked by his moustache and skirt. I do like the use of white voodoo balls for the hands.

The head is blocky but does have some nice details on it. The small horns are used for its eyebrows while larger tooth pieces for the moustache. It has some white hair that uses a 2×2 curved slope piece along with a couple of 1×2 slope pieces. The hat uses a 4×4 round plate along with a couple of 4×4 round bricks topped off with a 4×4 dish and a pearl-gold cupcake piece on the top.

In my opinion, the limited edition LEGO Seasonal Nutcracker (40254) is a great little set that looks faithful to their wooden counterparts. The completed build is actually bigger than I expected and makes a nice item for the mantle. Like with the modern nutcrackers, this LEGO version also can not crack nuts and there’s even a warning on the box stating it. There’s still a few more weeks until you can get your copy of the set during Black Friday or a week earlier for VIPs.

Ok Im glad to hear this will be available during the double VIP weekend, so I dont have to make a third LEGO purchase this month XD

I was recently commenting on how they just crammed four GWP promos into just under three months, with the Cavemen, the green dragon, Lloyd, and the VIP set. Now we’re into the last two months of the year, so there are two holiday GWPs between early November and Brick Friday. In December it sounds like there’s a possibility of seeing a fourth annual ornament, and they end the month with a Darth Vader pod. Plus there’s that mini London Bus for those who missed it or want more. And of course, not all product launches line up nicely with GWP promos, and delaying purchase on some of those products can mean you’ll have to wait for new stock to arrive, or you won’t be able to complete something in time to display it.

Nov 18&19 are supposed to have special Brick Friday offers. Anyone know if this will be the full range of Brick Friday sale offers?

    • Purple Dave

Traditonally, they have a lot of older sets on sale to help clear them out. Expect more sets to be on sale for BFP than BF, and the full list should be posted in the next two weeks.

BFP weekend has double points for VIPs. I don’t think the points offer is extended to BF weekend, but I always try to get my purchases done during BFP.

If they plan to do another annual ornament like the train, tree, and toy soldier from the previous three years, I suspect it would be offered as a BFP VIP exclusive (I think that’s what they did with 2016’s toy soldier).

Basically, BFP weekend gets better and more offers than BF weekend, and there’s less chance they’ll run out of the Nutcracker GWP.

Are there any exclusive or rare pieces in this set? Just wonder if it’s something I can piece together for a lot cheaper.

    • Allen

There are no exclusive pieces but the voodoo balls for the hand and the pearl-gold angle piece on the shoulder may be somewhat rare.

Voodoo balls? Where did that name come from?

Weird. Not only does it make absolutely no sense, but they’ve been out for 16-1/2 years and this is the first time I’ve seen that name used.
