Celebrating 60 Years of the LEGO Brick

LEGO 60th Anniversary

Sixty years ago, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen submitted a patent application for a simple toy building brick. It wouldn’t get approved until a couple of months later and unbeknownst to him, this toy brick would eventually lead the company to becoming one of the most recognizable toys in the world as well as becoming the biggest toymaker in the world. It took some trial and error but the modern brick design that we know and love wouldn’t be developed for a few more years and hasn’t changed that much since then. Today, we celebrate sixty years of the LEGO brick and hopefully for many more years to come!

LEGO Brick Patent

60 years ago, the simple idea of adding tubes inside a plastic brick turned into one of the most exciting and influential toys in the world – the LEGO® brick.

Since then, LEGO play has been about the joy of building and giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play.

“LEGO play is powered by imagination and curiosity, and the LEGO brick is at the very heart of it – putting the bricks together and taking them apart over and over, with imagination as your only limit. This helps young minds to stay open, keep exploring and develop skills essential for the 21st century*, such as creativity, collaboration and problem solving,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer, the LEGO Group.

The LEGO Group began producing a plastic brick in 1949, but it was not until nine years later, in 1958, that the LEGO brick

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season 2 DVD Available on March 13

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season 2

It has been revealed today that Season Two of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures will be on home media on March 13. The DVD will include all 12 episodes as well as 5 bonus shorts. For you pin collectors, there is also an exclusive LEGO Darth Vader pin to go along with it as well. You can now pre-order the DVD on Amazon for $18 and you’ll receive it on release date.

At the end of the first season, the Freemaker family found a new home with the rebel fleet. Their new circumstances bring them face to face with brutal Imperial forces, desperate Hutts, conniving Sith Lords, and the Emperor’s latest plaything, M-OC, a terrifying hunter droid who continually modifies himself to fit any occasion. In response to these threats, Rowan’s powers grow and strengthen until he has a vision of a sleek, invulnerable ship that can save the Rebellion and stop the Empire in its tracks — the Arrowhead. The catch is, the Arrowhead is a ship only Rowan can build. Once again, it’s up to the youngest Freemaker to save the galaxy.

10 Foot Brick in New York to Celebrate LEGO 60th Anniversary

Earlier today, LEGO revealed a large-scale model of a red 2×4 brick that is located at the Flatiron District in New York City to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the LEGO brick. The model consists of 133,000 bricks, weighs 1,200 pounds, and took about 350 hours to construct. The 10-foot 2×4 will be at the Flatiron Plaza at the corner of Fifth Avenue, 23rd Street and Broadway, at Madison Square Park and will be there until 4pm Sunday, January 28.

LEGO is going all out with their marketing for the 60th anniversary celebration. Yesterday, it was revealed there will be some Walmart exclusive 60th anniversary LEGO sets that are reported to be available starting on Sunday as well. Check out the time-lapse video of the construction of the 2×4 brick below.
