Today at Toys R Us stores, they were holding a special The LEGO Movie building event. Kids were able to build and take home Emmet’s car which can also be changed into a flying car. The whole “set” consists of 42 pieces which 40 are used for the regular car and 34 for the flying version. I prefer the regular car because the other feels incomplete but I didn’t expect too much given the pieces used. Below are the instructions for both modes of the car.
Update: Thank you to IconBoy for providing a nice PDF version of the build. You can download it here.

I’ve done the math over and over again. Am I crazy or is there only 41 pieces total? I end up with only 1 extra piece ( 2 x 8 Plate ) at the end of the first build. What am I missing?
There are only 41. The sheet is wrong about how many pieces Emmet’s Fly Car uses.
Our local TRU only gave us the pieces for the regular car – not a big deal, and not complaining since it was free, but just curious if other stores did this.
yeah…the instructions state you should have 2 extra pieces, but, I only had the one. in fact, to answer mike too, the 2×8 was handed to us specifically. (my tru pre-bags the set so no one grabs too many of one piece)
The TRU I went to used cardboard LEGO themed trays filled with each piece. The left and right doors were in the same tray which would be confusing for little kids and I forgot to take the 2 x 8 Plate because it was only mentioned on Sheet #2 so I had to take one from my parts collection when I got home. They should have pre-bagged them to make things easier. LEGO should either polybag these up or make it mandatory for the TRU to pre-bag the sets prior to the event instead of using those trays.
My TRU use to have the trays but they now pre-bag everything because it’s gets very crowded, they would quickly run out due to the demand, or run out of certain parts. I actually prefer this in case I’m in a hurry and can just hurry the kids back out.
I’ve built both models and I too only had the 2×8 piece as extra after building the car, which means the combined set should only have 41 pieces, not 42.
* The car is 41 pieces + 1 unused 2×8
* The plane is 34 pieces + 4 unused tires + 2 unused wheel + 1 unused bracket
So I’m guessing ‘two extra pieces’ blurt on sheet 1 is a mistake.
The total number of parts is 41. The small car is 40 pieces + 1 unused (2×8 plate). The flying car is 34 pieces + 7 extra (4 tires, 2 wheels, and 1×2 panel). Also, if this car looks familiar, it is quite similar to 3177 Small Car.
My TRU had the pieces in trays but told us we had to pick either the car or the fly car. of course we chose the car and finished the build and went home but it noticed on the sheet it said “notice the 2 extra pieces…sheet 2” so I sent my husband back to TRU feeling cheated and they built the fly car. lol so we now have complete sets of both.
