It seems like every year, we get a LEGO straight-to-DVD movie that also comes with an exclusive minifigure of some sort. This trend first started back in 2011 with LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace which came with a Young Han Solo minifig. Soon after that, Warner Bro. Home Entertainment has been cracking out movies from various themes like DC Comics Super Heroes that also comes packed with a minifigure. Even live-action movies like the Hobbit trilogy joined in with their exclusives which you can see from the list below:
LEGO Batman: The Movie – Super Heroes Unite – Clark Kent/Superman
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Bilbo Baggins
LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out – Darth Vader with Medal
The LEGO Movie – Everything is Awesome Edition – Vitruvius
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – Legolas Greenleaf
LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League – Batzarro
LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom! – Trickster
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies – Bard and Bain
It’s now 2016 and another LEGO movie will be releasing next week with LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Cosmic Clash which includes Cosmic Boy. A few months after that, the recently announced LEGO Scooby-Doo!: Haunted Hollywood will be coming out as well. I don’t expect WB to stop anytime soon as these movies do sell pretty well especially if it comes packed
So the question is, do you purchase these LEGO movies for the actual content the movies provide or do you purchase them just for the exclusive minifigures? For me personally, I’m a LEGO collector and I do buy them for the minifigs but I do go back and watch the movies when I have time and some of them are actually pretty decent for the most part. Which end of the spectrum are you guys? Let us know in the comments below.

I only buy the movies for the figure. But I do enjoy watching the movies themselves.
Only the superhero ones
I have the last 2 DC movies in my watch pile but opened the figures up immediately. Oh dear. However the movies aren’t terrible but their strengths are with physical toys.
I mainly buy for the figure. The figure determines the purchase. Hence me wanting Trickster and Cosmic Boy made me buy the movies. Not all their exclusives have been out of the park.
I buy for both, but that means buying off Amazon, since they don’t really release them here in Australia. I was very pleased with the quality of the DC Lego films, as well. They are super funny and have real heart (unlike Teen Titans Go)
Let me guess…mid to late 20’s? That’s about the only age range that would randomly segue into some random TTG-bashing because they’re bitter about how much more successful TTG is than that half-baked Teen Titans show that was only as successful as it was because it came out at a time when kids would only watch anime. Anyone younger or older generally either prefers TTG or doesn’t care for either.
TTG is one of the most hilarious series on TV right now, and far better written than any of the LEGO specials. And what it may lack in heart, it makes up with repeated and well-deserved applications of boot to Teen Titans’ tender bits.
I have only bought one ( Lego Batman the movie) and I bought it for the minifig, I also plan on buying Justice league vs bizzaro league.
I buy the superhero ones for the minifigs. But I have nephews who watch the movies when they are at my house. Win-win
The Star Wars and Batman movies are pretty good on their own, but the minifigures definitely helped incentivize me to buy them. The Hobbits, I was going to buy anyway, but Target getting the minifig edition convinced me to buy it from them. Though I’m miffed that 1) the extended editions came out later and 2) we got a blue Bilbo instead of the Old Bilbo that everyone wanted.
This is the first I’ve heard of anyone voicing a desire for Old Bilbo, so I’m not sure I’d say “everyone”. There are much bigger gaps in the Tolkien themes, like the White Tree of Gondor, the Balrog, and Mount Doom. But the really odd but was that we got this blue jacket Bilbo in the theatrical release, even though he never wore that outfit in the movie. Then a year later we get the Extended Edition, and there he is wearing that exact outfit when he goes grocery shopping right before the Dwarves empty his entire pantry. It would have made a lot more sense to bundle the minifig with the EE release.
Just Star Wars so far – have both Han and Vader with medal. 🙂
I buy for the Minifigures (with movies or books), but only at discount prices. My kids can watch the movies one day with me. I don’t buy the movies without the minifigures, but may do so when my kids are ready. I also only buy for the minifigures that interest me.
I do buy the superheroes titles, only for Minifigures.
I’ve bought the DC movies, starting with the Bizarro League one, for the figures, but I don’t buy every movie that comes with a minifigure. Some of them simply add good figures to my collection, but if I don’t feel like I need it, then I won’t get it.
I’m a sucker for unique minifigs, so the Scooby and superhero ones are must-buys.
That the movies are generally fun is icing.
I own all the DC and Hobbit ones mentioned. Love to collect them! I have yet to watch a DC Lego movie though. Maybe someday a marathon of them will happen!
I have the Hobbit ones and some of the DC ones. They’re not usually super expensive and you can trade the film in once you’ve watched it, so it’s worth it, especially since special edition figures usually have amazing printing…
I grab the ones that contain a figure I’m interested in, but do enjoy the ~movie~. I’m almost 40, so having something I can watch with my 3 year old around that slightly entertains the both of us is neat.
Yeah, I buy for the figures when I can. Mostly the superheroes ones. I haven’t watched the movies yet, trying to get my nephew interested in watching them with me but he has so far resisted even though he likes Ninjago and Lego Stars Wars.
I guess I’m a bit of a junkie, then. I own both of the SW minifigs, and both of the Hobbit exclusive minifigs (Legolas is an exclusive set, but the minifig is in two other sets, and Bard is in one basic set besides the SDCC release…though I own both as well). As for DC, I bought two copies of LB:TM, and three copies of all subsequent releases, plus I think I may might have picked up a third Clark Kent on the secondary market.
