Disney Infinity Cancelled, More Fuel for Star Wars to LEGO Dimensions?

Just a short while ago, Disney Infinity SVP & GM, John Blackburn, announced that they have decided to discontinue the production of Disney Infinity. Their final retail releases will be coming out in the next month or two but that is it for the toys-to-life brand. As you may or may not know, Disney Infinity 3.0 was the home to Star Wars line and that’s why LEGO Dimensions didn’t have any expansion packs based on the theme. At E3 2015, Disney vice president of production John Vignocchi also stated that Star Wars will never come to LEGO Dimensions.

Does this announcement of Disney Infinity being cancelled pave way for the Star Wars franchise to come to LEGO Dimensions? If you recall, there was a rumor last year from a fairly reliable source on Eurobricks that there could be LEGO Dimensions Star Wars expansion packs coming in late 2016/early 2017.

There’s no actual correlation between today’s announcement and the rumors but who knows if there’s already a deal between LEGO and Disney/Lucasfilm to produce expansion packs for Dimensions. This could also mean that other Disney franchises could also be coming over to LEGO Dimensions. Stay tuned as I’ll definitely update if there’s any news, especially with E3, San Diego Comic Con, and Gamescom coming in the next few months.

I always said I thought it would make sense for Disney to play both sides of this fence. I’ve also said that the “toys to life” thing started by Skylanders is a racket, so I don’t let my kids play Skylanders, or Disney infinity. That being said, I’m already addicted to Lego, and I’d rather pay $10 for a figure and get a game level, then pay $250 dollars to get a figure out of a set I don’t want (or $20 on Bricklink, as is mostly the case)

Hopefully we get to see Marvel and Star Wars now. Would be awesome to pit Joker vs Captain America

Wow this was shocking. While I do hate to see things end, especially something as potential-filled as Disney Infinity, I am excited for this possibility (already calling that we’ll get Bruce Banner on a base so he can turn into the Hulk). That being said, I’m not sure how I would feel about this. What I originally loved Dimensions for is its obscurity. Having Portal or Wizard of Oz levels before Harry Potter? Yessir! But I fear having a whole wave of Star Wars, Marvel, Pirates of the Caribbean and who knows else will completely throw out other franchises. Plus another fear is that they’ll do a Disney exclusive Dimensions, completely throwing out the idea of crossovers. Another annoying factor is, now we’ll just get $15+ Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk (Hopefully Bruce Banner), Spider-man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, C3-PO, R2-D2, (Other FA characters), Jack Sparrow, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and who ever else? Another issue is will they do Movie designed Marvel Minifigures or a mix of comics and movies. I’d perfer the Movies since it would just make more sense.

While I concede that both Star Wars and Marvel have a huge catalogue of popular characters to their names, I feel like WB wouldn’t let Disney “take over” their game. They didn’t do it with their DC character lineup, which was a total of eight characters of varying popularity and exposure being released over a 7-8 month timespan, so I don’t expect they would do it with a competing corporation’s IP. Granted, there are more DC characters all but confirmed for the next season of Dimensions, but even so it’s been a fairly slow, gradual rollout.

The other point that comes to mind is that with a toys-to-life game, one of the draws is that you don’t have to buy characters you don’t want. There will be collectors who snap up every pack that comes out but there are plenty of players, myself included, who limit their sets to characters they like and/or characters that will unlock content. Heck, I think some players ignore some franchises entirely, Adventure Worlds and other content be damned. And if people just want the physical figures of those $15+ characters listed, they’d be better off buying normal Lego sets anyway, getting multiple characters and some properly-scaled vehicles or buildings (or, if they prefer, spare parts for their Lego box) for probably the price of a Dimensions Level Pack.

If they were to include any other Disney IPs aside from SW or Marvel, I would hope they’d connect them all to a single Adventure World such as Disneyland or something, instead of having separate hubs for Mickey/Toy Story/Inside Out/Pirates/whatever else. Which, again, I don’t think WB would allow to happen. I think personally it would make more sense if Dimensions got Marvel and SW and no other Disney IPs.

Regarding the figures’ designs, I’d expect them to be the same as the ones they’ve had in previous Lego games. It ties them more closely to the Lego multiverse as a whole (much like how the DC characters are all but confirmed to be the same versions of those from previous Lego DC games) and, with any luck, Traveller’s Tales might even still have the character models and assets they’d created for those previous games, which hopefully would only need minor tweaking to be updated for Dimensions.

the Marvel Universe is a big NO when it comes to a game where DC is already in it. So I Wouldn’t hope to much on banner…

People probably thought the same before LEGO came out with the Super Heroes theme. I don’t see why it can’t happen. Plus DC and Marvel have collaborated with the DC vs. Marvel comic series in the 90s. If having both DC and Marvel properties in Dimensions doesn’t hurt either brand, I don’t see them not consenting to a potentially lucrative licensing opportunity.

If Marvel did come to dimensions I’d love to see one or two amalgam characters (DC and Marvel fusion characters that are official)

Man, this is quite sad. While I wasn’t the biggest infinity fan (Only picked up the figures I thought were interesting) it was still a good game series and had potential for even more. With that said I’d love to see Star Wars and Marvel in Dimensions, both would work quite well in the game and it would be cheap since most of the figures would already have in game models from the previous Lego games.

I think we are all over looking bigger things.

Marvel would be a huge legal issue because Dimensions is also made by WB which owns DC.

However there is also Pixar, maybe a Finding Dory set, and so many others, then Pirates of the Caribbean, Indian Jones and so many other things Disney owns.

    • Gomek

Warner Brother’s publishes the Marvel Avengers video game so this isn’t really a huge legal issue. If there is money to be made, they’ll work something out.

People thought that would be the case for LEGO: Marvel Universe (and LEGO: Marvel Avengers wasn’t even on the table), and for a while that was actually true. WB (who had no problem with Disney-owned PotC) didn’t want to do anything from Marvel because Marvel Comics would make money off of it. Then someone pointed out that because WB owned TTG, they would too. Suddenly, Marvel was on the schedule. However, if they do this, don’t expect it to be MCU characters. All of the DC minifigs are comic book versions, so it only makes sense to follow suit with any Marvel minifigs (and it would be a spectacular way to feed a few more of the X-Men into the system).
