Even with the success of the first movie, it looks like that are more changes to The LEGO Movie Sequel. ComicBook.com is reporting that Trolls director Mike Mitchell has now been named the new director for The LEGO Movie Sequel. He replaces Rob Schrab who announced as the previous director around this time two years ago. According to reports, the change to Mitchell was based on creative differences between Warner Bros. and Schrab.
The swap in directors for The LEGO Movie Sequel is the latest change for the movie. Last year, the original script by Phil Lord and Chris Miller was rewritten by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and also the release date was pushed back for a second time to 2019.

I didn’t think Trolls was as good as I thought it would be, so understandably, I’m a little worried.
Lord and Miller wrote The LEGO Movie. WB had very little faith in it, judging by the decision to release it in February, but they left it alone and went with it. It was a smash success. Lord and Miller wrote The LEGO Movie II. WB had very little faith in it, and had someone rewrite it. Then they hired a new director. Then they hired a newer director. I no longer have high hopes for this movie, unless the next thing they announce is that Lord and Miller have taken over directing and are canning the rewrite in favor of their original script.
To be fair, before this news the people they got to write and direct made some fantastic things. Rob was a writer and director of Community as well as a comic book writer as well. Bob wrote Bojack Horseman. Those two were perfect for this franchise especially Rob. Also, at the time, it made sense to hire a new director. Lord and Miller made it a big deal that you have to have these movies have their own tone, style, and voice so they feel the same as the original and you get that by hiring different talent with different styles. As for this recent news, I still have hope for this sequel. Mitchell has made some decent things recently. Trolls was okay but it was visually creative and did have some clever LEGO movie style ideas. He also was a director on the live action portion of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, which was pretty fun and managed to have the same energy of surrealism and comedy as the animated portions. Both of those I feel fit The LEGO Movie style perfection. Maybe Mitchell can bring something new to the film and also can be a worthy sequel to the original.
