Philly Brick Fest 2014 LEGO Event Kit Ben’s Discovery (PBF001) Review

Philly Brick Fest 2014 Ben's Discovery (PBF001)

Today was the first day of AFOL & Exhibitor registration for Philly Brick Fest 2014 and inside my goodie bag was an exclusive LEGO event kit for particular registrants, Ben’s Discovery (PBF001). This minifigure is one of Philadelphia’s finest residents and his work in proving that lightning is electricity, Benjamin Franklin.

He is created from Bilbo Baggins’ torso and Shakespeare’s hair piece. There is also his kite and the key that is attached to the string. He is housed in a clear standard baseball card case. Overall, Ben Franklin is a pretty cool and exclusive minifigure to add to my LEGO collection.

LEGO May 2014 Building Events

Toys R Us LEGO Star Wars Building Event

LEGO Club has published a couple of new free LEGO building events that will be happening early next month. First up is a “Build your own Star Wars Starfighter” event at all Toys R Us stores on May 3rd from 12-2pm. Kids ages 5 and up will be able to build a LEGO Star Wars Mini TIE Fighter and a Mini X-Wing, similar to the one you would get in an advent calendar.

The other building event is the LEGO Store Monthly Mini Model Build. For May, you can make a cute little dragon that breathes fire. Like with every monthly mini build, the event starts at 5pm but families usually line up for it way earlier than that. Quantities are limited and are available while supplies last.

Philly Brick Fest is only a week away and I’m happy to announce that I will be attending the convention and covering the event. This will be my very first LEGO event that I will be attending and I’m very excited that I can be a part of it. The convention will be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and opens at 10am until 5pm. If you’re in the area and you’re a LEGO fan, I highly recommend you attend it. Although you can’t buy any more tickets online, they will be available at the door. Hope to see you all there!

LEGO Pick-A-Brick Wall Changes

New Pick-A-Brick

If you have been to a LEGO Brand Store recently, you might have seen some new changes to the Pick-A-Brick wall. For people who frequent the wall, you may have noticed that the price per cup has been raised $1.00 from its previous price. The smaller cups are now $8.99 each and the larger ones are $15.99. Another change is that the wall will have certain brick elements that are the same for every Brand Store and will be rotated simutaneously throughout the year. These elements will give kids some inspiration of what they can build and the labels suggest what they could go well with such as LEGO City or Star Wars.

For people who buy in bulk of the elements at the store, the prices for the cases has also gone up from the usual $75 to $100 price tag now. Even with the price increase, the cases are still a pretty good value if you need a lot of a certain element. How do you guys feel about these changes to the PAB Wall? Let us know in the comments below.

Shout out to Genevieve who does a great job in keeping our wall filled with cool and interesting pieces.

The LEGO Movie Themed Community Window at Fashion Valley LEGO Store

Fashion Valley LEGO Store Community Window

The Community Window at my local LEGO Store in San Diego (Fashion Valley) has been changed out and the new model is The LEGO Movie themed. It was created by Tommy who is a fellow member of SandLUG. The build is actually an interactive model where he has placed 12 Emmet minifigures throughout the whole model. The store even has a cool little contest where they are giving away the remaining Benny posters they have to children who can find all 12 Emmets. If you’re in the area, stop by the store and check out Tommy’s model and see if you can find all 12 “hidden” Emmets. Technically, I found 14 mentions of him but who’s counting 😉

LEGO April Fool’s Day Roundup

It seemed that yesterday, I caused quite a stir with my post stating that I will be leaving my site at the end of the month. It seems that I couldn’t fool some of you guys. I am happy to announce that I will not be leaving The Brick Fan and will be continuing what I’ve enjoyed doing for the past two years. To those who thought I was really leaving, I’m very sorry for pulling that joke on you. There were quite a few comments left on the post as well as on Facebook from a number of fans and I was touched that many of you really enjoy coming to the site. As a result of this joke, I will be doing another giveaway in the very near future! Stay tuned for that.

In other LEGO April Fool’s Day news, there were a quite a few sites in the community that also did their own thing. If I missed anything, let me know in the comments and I’ll add it to the list below.

LEGO announced on their Facebook Page that for one day only, all orders that were placed will be delivered by a real turtle and shipping times would vary.

Toys N Bricks announced that they were going to be focusing on other construction toy companies.

Brickset announced that they were acquired by Mattel and Huw would replace LEGO products in the database with Mega Bloks. Brickset also reported that The LEGO Group announced a 10 year brand strategy for LEGO City … Continue
