This September, LEGO will be releasing another Collectible Minifigures series and this wave will focus entirely on the Shrek Series (71053). This set is part of the new LEGO Shrek sets that LEGO has released this year.
Thelonious
Thelonious is a bland minifigure with the black and gray executioner outfit. The belt printing does have the F for Faarquaad. The head itself is all black and the mask is pretty much the face. His accessories are the microphone and a printed Aawww cue card.
Puss in Boots
This is the second Puss in Boots minifigure as there is also another one in the Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots (72423) set however they are both different. He has the orange body with the belt around the waist and short legs with the boots printed on. The hat is molded on to its head and has a yellow feather. His accessories include a sack and one of the Blind Mice.
Gingy
Gingy has the nougat body color like with many other gingerbread minifigures in the past and there’s some purple gumdrops for his buttons and white frosting on the torso and legs. His accessory is his lollipop weapon.
Shrek
Shrek has on his tan burlap shirt with a skirt piece to represent the extra hanging under the belt. The pants are brown and are patterned. His head is large showing a smile but the neck sticks out too much. His accessory is a book of fairy tales.
Dragon
Dragon is more magenta colored instead of more reddish in the movies. I guess LEGO was going for some shading effects. It has a pair of darker red wings and its red ears are rubbery.
Fiona and Donkey
Fiona is in her dark green dress with some nice pearl-gold printing on the torso. The hair and head is one molded piece is showing her ogre form. She doesn’t come with an accessory but Donkey is included. Donkey comes with a body and the head which shows his iconic grin. I’m not sure why Donkey isn’t his own figure since he is one of the major characters in the movies but I guessing he’s not an actual minifigure.
Merlin
Merlin wears a blue dress-like robe with some detailing on the torso and legs. The legs also show him with his dirty socks. His beard covers up his smile and his wizard hat is also printed. His accessories include some translucent blue Power Blasts.
Pinocchio
Pinocchio is wearing the white shirt with blue suspenders. The legs are dual-molded for his brown shoes. His head is special molded to include his pointy yellow hat and hair. His accessory is one more of the Blind Mice.
Big Bad Wolf
Wolfie is dressed in Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother’s pink nightgown. LEGO used a dress piece for the legs but I think regular legs would’ve been fine as well. He also comes with the third Blind Mice.
Lord Farquaad
Farquaad is in his red and black outfit that has some gold printing on the collar and belt. Since he’s really short, he gets the short legs. His double-sided head shows him with an evil smile on one side and a concerned smile on the other. His accessory is the Magic Mirror that uses a minifigure head.
Fairy Godmother
She has on her blue dress with some nice silver detailing on both sides of the torso and on the dress piece. Her double-sided head shows her with her half glasses with smiles on both sides. Her accessory includes her wand and a printed tile of her business card.
Prince Charming
Charming is in his blue outfit that has printing of the fleur-de-lys on both sides of the torso and on part of the legs. His double-sided head shows him with an evil smirk on one side and an angry scowl on the other. His accessory is his sword.
Results
The LEGO Collectible Minifigures Shrek Series (71053) is a decent wave that includes all the major characters from the movies. The main issue I have with it is for the Shrek minifigure. His head is way too big for the body and it looks awkward. The problem here is that he has no belly. He’s way too skinny and that makes his head disproportionate. A large mold for the head and belly would’ve worked better.
Other than that, all the other minifigures are okay. Donkey could’ve been his own minifigure but since he’s not an actual minifigure, LEGO decided to put him with another character. I mean that’s fine because that gives us an extra slot for another character, perhaps the human form of Fiona.
