LEGO hasn’t released much in terms of gift with purchase sets for Disney 100 but that will be changing really soon with the release of Mini Steamboat Willie (40659). The set has 424 pieces and you’ll be able to get it from October 23-31 with purchases of $100 or more in Disney properties which includes Marvel and Star Wars. The set features a mini replica of the LEGO Ideas Steamboat Willie (21317).
The set does includes a minifigure of Mickey Mouse in black and white. Unlike the previous versions of the minifigure, the legs are not dual molded but a flat gray. The hat has also been released before from the Series 2 Disney Collectible Minifigures (71024).
Although the finished build has a black and white color scheme with some gray, there are colored parts when you’re building the set. The innards include a gear mechanism that controls the paddle wheels on the as well as the smokestacks on the top of the boat. The building of the insides is color coordinated with the red and green sides to signify the way the gears are supposed to go.
Everything eventually gets covered up with the white bricks on the cabin. The paddle wheels are the most repetitive part of the whole build as you have to build each individual paddle 18 times.
As mentioned before, there’s a simple but nice play feature for the Steamboat. It’s hard to see but it does sit on some wheels connected to the gears and when you push and pull the boat, it spins the paddle wheels and smokestacks go up and down. If you’re a display collector, you probably just experience it a few times and it’ll go up on a display after that.
Overall, the LEGO Disney 100 Mini Steamboat Willie (40659) is a really good set and it will look great next to the original set. With the price requirement relatively low at $100 for Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see it sell out quickly unless LEGO produced a lot of the set.
Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
