LEGO Ideas Sea Serpent (40912)

Back in 1992 when the LEGO Castle theme was at it’s high point, one of the sets released at the time was the Sea Serpent (6057). 34 years after by the grace of the LEGO Ideas A Twist of Nostalgia building contest, we have an updated Sea Serpent (40912). The set has 241 pieces and will be available during LEGO Insiders Days 2026 from July 7-12 with purchases of $180.

Minifigures

There are only two minifigures in the set which are the two Griffin Knights. These versions of the knights have the same printing as the ones in the LEGO Ideas Minifigure Vending Machine (21358) but they have blue detailing instead of the red. Their accessories include a sword and an axe and printed dragon shields for their weapons. Note that the original set had 5 minifigures.

Build

The updated Sea Serpent does have the distinct blue and black colors of the original set, however, the design has been modified with more modern parts.

The hull of the ship instead of using bricks, now use specialized hull pieces.

The bowsprit in the front shorter and does not have the dragon piece up front.

On to the middle of the ship, the printing on the fabric sail has been updated to the new Black Knights emblem. The original submission had a brick-built sail. Since printed elements cost more to produce, LEGO went with the usual way of adding printed parts without raising prices too much. The LEGO trademark on the bottom left corner is kind of an eyesore.

There’s also a hidden compartment the deck which opens up to reveal a cookie whereas the submission had gold coins. Instead, the gold coins are now inside the barrel that is next to the door.

At the back of the ship, there are some hinged doors that open to reveal a box with some gold ingots on top. There’s nothing inside the box.

Results

Overall, the LEGO Ideas Sea Serpent (40912) is a good set that pays homage to the original 6057 set. Since the building contest was a twist of nostalgia, I’m happy to see that LEGO didn’t just copy the former and gave modern updates to it while still having the overall aesthetics of the Sea Serpent.

As far as the $180 price point, it is on point with other gift with purchase sets around the same size. The main critizism I have with the set is that it only has two minifigures. At least one more would have made it perfect but LEGO cheapened out. Even the fan designer proposed three with their submission but I guess LEGO didn’t agree.

Again the Sea Serpent (40912) will be available during LEGO Insiders Days 2026 from July 7-12 with purchases of $180.
