One of the more anticipated LEGO Ideas sets for this year was The X-Files (21369) which just released at the beginning of the month. The set has 1,278 pieces and retails for $199.99.
Minifigures
There are 8 minifigures in this set including Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch, The Flukeman and a Grey alien.
Mulder is in his blue suit with the shirt and tie. He also has his badge printed on the torso. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and an angry expression on the other. His accessory is a brick-built flashlight.
Scully has on a nougat color suit also with her FBI badge printed on the torso. Her double-sided head is pretty much the same as Mulder with the smile and angry looks. The accessory is also a flashlight.
Skinner is in his typical white shirt with gray pants. Since he has a bald head, he only has a stern expression on one side.
Mr. X is wearing his gray suit with a red tie. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and a stern look on the other.
Alex Krycek wears a gray shirt with a black leather jacket. His regular hands have been replaced with gray hands for his gloves. His double-sided head shows him with a stern look on one side and an angry look on the other.
Carl Busch, aka the Cigarette Smoking Man, is in his usual black suit. His double-sided head shows him with a stern look on one side and angry look on the other.
The Flukeman is a genetic mutant that has a white body with folds on both sides of the torso. The head shows it with a terrifying face.
Finally we have Grey which has a fairly muscular body type. It has the elongated head with the large eyes. It’s nice to see a new Alien aside from the Series 6 Collectible Minifigure.
Build
The build is set like like a cross section of an underground building with the upper level being a forest area. The lower level shows part of Fox Mulder’s basement FBI office. The front part can be taken out as it is its own section. Here we have a desk with three chairs. On the desk is the X-Files Case Folder as well as a printed tile of some sunflower seeds. On the left side you have a puddle of Black Oil. In the front of the section, there is the printed tile of the famous X-Files tagline, “The Truth is Out There.”
For the inner part of Mulder’s office, you have your usual stuff like desks and cabinets. Placed all around the room are more Easter eggs. Starting on the left side, there is a map of Antarctica which references the The X-Files: Fight the Future movie.
Another reference is the posted hidden frogs newspaper clipping of The Lone Brickman. When you’re building the set, there are 3 frogs that are placed around the set. On top of it, is a LEGO version of the FBI logo.
In the cabinet on the back, there’s a stickered tile of some binary numbers 01000 11001 01001 00100 11110 10001 11010 10011 which also converts to FROGS.
On to the other wall, there’s a “I Want to Believe poster” and right next to it is a LEGO minifigure head on Mars which references the Face on Mars or it could be it entity that Lt. Col. Marcus Aurelius Belt saw in flashbacks in the Space episode. On the same board, there are some crop circles.
If you look up, there are also some pencils in the courtesy of Mulder.
The top level of the build is the forest. There are five trees that you have to build and they are extremely tedious trying to get the leaves and branches in the correct spots. The whole forest section can be removed from the underground office to be displayed as a standalone build.
In the middle of the forest, there is a transparent pole that is used for the hovering UFO. It works well but you can still see a giant pole.
The UFO itself is triangular in shape and is all black. At the tips, there are some transparent black bulbs for its lights. It sits on top of the pole using a pin and it can freely spin.
Results
The LEGO Ideas The X-Files (21369) is pretty faithful to the original design from the Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback! building contest. One thing I would’ve like to see kept was the X-Files logo on the front plaque but we got the tagline instead.
The build was actually fun minus the trees. There’s a good amount of Easter eggs in the set and I appreciate the fan designer and LEGO designers putting them in. At $199.99 price point, it is a little on the expensive side. This is probably due to licensing and all the minifigures included. I feel that $159.99 would’ve been a better price for it.
