Flagship LEGO releases for many years have included gift with purchase sets that tie into the main set. From August 1-10 when you purchase the new LEGO Ideas The X-Files (21369), you’ll also receive the LEGO Ideas The X-Files: Scully’s Lab (40896), while supplies last. This 221 piece set features the classroom lab at the FBI National Academy.
Minifigure
The included minifigure is an exclusive version of Dana Scully. For this one, she’s in her blue scrubs and white lab coat which is a fitting outfit for a lab. Her hands are also blue since she is wearing some gloves for the experiments. Her double-sided head shows her with a quizzical look on one side and her wearing safety goggles on the other. Her accessory is a printed tile of a chart.
Build
The build is set in Scully’s lab and right in the middle, you have a examination table with a light next to it. There’s also a small cart with a bowl sitting on it. You can move these around using the numerous jumper plates that are all over the floor.
On to the left wall area, there’s a clear door and a clear window panel behind the desk that holds a microscope. There’s also blue and orange jars with unknown substances nearby.
The adjacent wall has more detail with the cabinets and sink. I do like how this area is built as it uses some interesting building techniques to attach the two.
The cabinets are filled with various jars and containers of different varieties. Below it is the sink and the countertop which is also filled with a bunch of jars. On the left, there’s a empty bowl and on the right is a donut.
Results
The LEGO Ideas The X-Files: Scully’s Lab (40896) is a decent gift with purchase set but LEGO could’ve gone more outside the box like with the WSQK Radio Station (40891) for the LEGO Icons Stranger Things: The Creel House (11370). One example could’ve been the Lone Gunmen’s loft apartment office since they were not in the main set. Other than that, the set can be useful for other builds that use a lab setting as it’s pretty generic.
