LEGO Looking for Ideas for Future Gift-With-Purchase Items

LEGO Creator Mini VW Beetle (40252)

We as fans have gotten at lot of great GWP (gift-with-purchase) sets over the years including the LEGO Creator Mini VW Beetle (40252) from earlier this year. The LEGO Community Engagement Team has asked the community to come up with ideas for future GWP items. I’ll be collecting ideas and give a list of top 5 most wanted GWP themes. It is fine if there are multiple comments for the same thing. Your ideas will influence future GWP items so send in some great ones.

The deadline to enter is October 31 but comment below so I can get a list going beforehand.

All ideas are welcome and below are some examples of ideas for a set which you might find helpful to get it started, as you can see there is room for many more good ideas.

– Futuristic Spaceship
– Pre-historic animals
– Modular building, corner restaurant
– Flower(s)
– Steam train (from 1923)
– Underwater creatures

Ideas should be compatible with the current LEGO system of play. This means that all ideas have to be possible to execute with the current portfolio of bricks & LEGO Minifigures.

*A “gift with purchase”-set is as the name indicates a set which is given to people who purchase a specific LEGO offer.

Are there any limits to how big the set could be? Ex. “large model of the London Bridge”

The ideas should not be size specific it London bridge can also be built in a smaller model. Focus should be on idea, not final model.

  • myscrnnm

We never got a second set of mini modulars. Perhaps if they were released separately as GWPs.

And it seems like LEGO wants more general ideas, but I would like to see a Ferrari F40 GWP since that’s the only Creator car from recent years that was never made as a miniature.

  • Riccardo Fiorelli

    1) DC Comics super heroes not released yet, such as Red Tornado
    2) pieces of brick-built furniture: TV set, Hi-Fi, couch, paintings …
    3) micro versions of larger sets

  • floridabrick

    EXCLUSIVE..MINIFIGURES. Drops the mic…
(picks mic back up, preferably Star Wars)

    • Daniel Caplinger

You’re thinking Seventh Sister, Wick Cooper, Governor Price, Admiral Konstantine, and the like, right? 😀

    • KinnickPlayz Minecraft

Have you thought of.. I don’t know.. EPISODE 8 FIGURES? *drops mic.. to then pick it up like floridabrick* Maybe like… an exclusive Leia minifig? or maybe a Luke Skywalker? of something we won’t see until the movie? If it the last one Lego can’t do it till maybe after the movie is released for like at least a month.. so people can see it..

  • Tad Powers

    1) A wooden Sensei Wu minifigure
    2) A micro Destiny’s bounty (from the movie obviously)

    • Korey Stock

I would like to see more mini figures from marvel and DC. New characters would be nice but variants would be great as well

      Favorite figures so far:
      Silver Venturian
      Winter soldier
      1960 mr freeze
      Giant man

  • TKCale

I want to see more Marvel Superheroe characters from the comics, GWP might be a nice way to get them since the sets seem to be more movie focused.

  • lorbaat

Exclusive minifigs are always a good bet, but I assume they want other stuff-

I’d love to see GWPs that are designed specifically to fit in with the full-scale “Expert Creator/Modular” aesthetic- things like Bus Stops, Newsstands, Pretzel/Roasted Chestnut/Souvenir vendors, a horse-drawn carriage, Busker/s, stoplights– I loved the fountain set that came out a while back. Stuff like that.

  • Lance Krbavac

    Mini Ferrari F40

  • GTY

    Minifigures accessories pack

  • legozebra

I’d definitely be very interested in getting a lot of the Ninjago TV show figures in the plastic, such as the remaining Elemental Masters, Kabuki Nya, etc, but Lego seems to be aware of this already with the recent Bricktober and Figure Pack sets available.

As for builds, almost every Lego videogame includes mini diorama builds depicting a scene – it would be awesome to get something like these mini dioramas when a large DC, Marvel, or movie tie-in set is released.

  • Michał Duda

    1) More “flora” sets – maybe little bonsai? or mini forest scene?
    2) Star Wars lightsaber
    3) re-editions of iconic themes – mini sets from adventures, indiana jones, harry potter, monster fighters, western etc…
    4) exclusive minifigures
    5) something with dinosaurs – fossil set or archeological site set…

  • Bricks, Studs, And More

Got a few ideas. Licensed theme sets and minifigures are cool, but how about something else?

    1. Mini Ferris Wheel
    2. Space Ship/Flying Saucer (maybe a duo?)
    3. Pirate Ship
    4. Animals (turtles, birds, fish, bears, etc.)
    5. Castle (mini Yellow Castle throwback? It was before my time so a version of that would be nice to have)
    6. Motorcycle
    7. Themed packs with little builds and Minifigures (Forest pack, Amusement Park Pack, Space Pack)
    8. Mini Modulars (Train Station, Bank, Police Department)

  • colby ostrin

Kind of like a Dimensions fun pack, only a polybag with an exclusive Minifigure and a small model that relates to them. And it could be a new theme every month.

    • Kon Sumer

Like that idea, i think the dimension packs are really cool specially for themes that don’t warrant a full set.

  • colby ostrin

And also maybe a polybag with The Flash and The Arrow in it.

  • Darth Curt

Mini Fokker DR 1 (Red Baron) to go along with the mini Sopwith Camel. (I want a big version too)

  • N – MCMXCIX `

How about some brick-built Badnicks, they already have the license for Sonic The Hedgehog.

    • Daniel Caplinger

Nice! But we might need a theme to go with it.

      • N – MCMXCIX `

Agreed. There are many things that could be done for such a theme:
The Tornado, Angel Island, Death Egg Robot, Egg Dragon, Ultimate Chaos, The X-Tornado, Time Eater, and more. Each of these could include a Chaos Emerald and one of the other Sonic characters.

  • N – MCMXCIX `

Another idea: Reissue some classic Minifigures and models from the 20th century. They did it before, they could do it again.

  • Dan Ritchie

Mini models of classic Lego sets?

    • Reaven Veaceslav

I like this idea a lot

  • Purple Dave

    Microscale Wayne Manor
    SDCC minifigs
    More TLBM batsuits

    • Purple Dave

Also, more accessory packs that are compatible with the Winter Village theme.

  • Mark Richards

Gifts with purchase that I’ve loved:
    * The fountain set (40221)
    * The gingerbread house (40139)
    * The Christmas train (40138)
    * The balloon cart (40108)
    * R2D2 (30611)
    * The mini beetle (40252)
    * Snowglobe (40223)

What these have in common is that they are cute builds, and typically also have parts I might otherwise want. Many of the free gifts amount to a mediocre minifig with a tiny assortment of parts – these don’t really interest me much. The builds that have rare parts or parts in rare colours or which are otherwise great as standalone models are the real gems. (Also: the monthly model mini-builds are good examples of the types of builds that I think would make good gifts – cute, nice part usage, stand-alone).

Things I’d like to see in upcoming free gifts? Unique minifigs. Or rareish parts (I loved that the gingerbread house used profile bricks (brick bricks)). Or a build that’s so well made I don’t want to disassemble it. WWI aircraft, but with nice details instead of just a couple bricks and plates. Mini versions of big models, like the mini beetle: The mini TARDIS from Dimensions is cool. Mini Wall-E. Mini modulars. Mini architecture builds (like the skyline sets, only, smaller). Themed minifigs with complete accessories, like a hot-dog vendor with stand, or the balloon vendor, or the Nexo Knights knight with a little motorcycle. Parts packs or accessories that make the big model I’m buying better: a carnival stand to go with my carnival ride.

  • Aimone El Caido

It would be great to have minifigures or small scenes of historical characters/events. It would be at the same time an instructive and funny add to any Lego collection, both for kids and afols.

  • Evster

Maybe a Speed Champions Trackside Accessory Pack similar to the City and Friends accessory packs that were released recently. It could have things like some spare tyres, maybe a few crash barriers. rumble strips, cones and maybe a rack with the different flags used by marshals during races like the blue, yellow, green and checkered flags.

  • Yorick

I really liked the mini R2-D2 from this year’s May The Fourth. A matching C-3PO would be great. Or Chopper from Rebels, but I expect he’s not as well-loved except by me.

I love miniaturized versions of the large sets, like the London Bus or the Beetle. Mini versions of the assorted Creator houses & buildings would be cool.

The Gingerbread house was probably the coolest set of recent memory. It has a lot of pieces and could have been a $10 retail set easily. Something unique like that.

    these are probably too vague.

  • scott

Mini buildings like those that toys r us had for bricktobers are great. it would be nice to add some more to our current collection. and the ideas for mini buildings are endless

  • Daniel Caplinger

    My ideas are as follows:

    *Droid Control Ship
    *Invisible Hand (Grievous’ flagship)
    *Seventh Sister with Probe Droid
    *Knighton Castle
*For the 60th anniversary: A classic police car with an officer from 1978 (complete with the stickered torso)
*I don’t know if this is allowed, as it is not an active theme, but: Morgan Lux (as an add-on for Ultra Agents collectors)
*Bendu from Star Wars Rebels Season 3
    *Graballa the Hutt’s Ship

  • marvel

    fantastic 4 minifig set

  • Bongo Beans

Mini Galaxy Explorer or small classic space repros like 886 buggy would fit in nicely with an anniversary theme.

  • Jon-Jacob

Historical figures, such as Justinian, Charlemagne, Constantine, etc.

  • Very good suggestions so far. Keep them coming!

  • Paul Renaud

more city sets like the balloon cart and flower cart

  • Alcabernotov

I think that the answer is driven by the purpose of the GWP.
The GWP has two big purposes purpose:
1: bring people to buy on Lego store
2: foster people to do recurring purchase

1: I think that Lego used a lot this strategy, creating WV Beetle, Mini Cooper, …
but this strategy can be enlarged creating extremely popular items in the world (mini tour eiffel, mini empire state building)

2: Is the thing that I like more. Lego, in this case, can have a great range of products to develop. And, probably, is the best to shift channel purchase among customers [business case needed].
There a lot of options to exploit:
    – 16×32 modular building (1200 pieces, without 16×32 base) splitted in 12 polybags, one for every month of the year
    – minifigures series. Lego usually realizes minifigures series that last on the market 4 months. In this case Lego has the possibility to add another series during the year
    – take great popular stories (like Hansel & Gretel) and represent the 5-6 most important scende creating small stand alone sets (very engaging for parents and kids)

  • KinnickPlayz Minecraft

Maybe a small scale.. Death Star? Something interesting from Star Wars? Maybe even something from Episode 8:The Last Jedi! 😀

  • Mom of Lego Fan

I love using the small sets to add to my modular buildings.
The fountain is in front of our Brick Bank. I use the gingerbread house with the Winter Toy shop for our Christmas village. I would like to see the following:
    -Food truck/hot dog stand/banana stand;)
    – European artist street scene with easel/artist
    -flower vendor
    -news stand

  • Great Flaboozin

I think a Marvel or DC minifig would be the coolest to see. My favorite to get would be Beta Ray Bill, but he is far too obscure. Including him, cool ones to see would be:

    -Beta Ray Bill (Marvel)
    -The Thing (Marvel)
    -Human Torch (Marvel)
    -Invisible Woman (Marvel)
    -Mr. Fantastic (Marvel)
    -The Question (DC)
    -Huntress (DC)
    -Dr. Fate (DC)

  • Kilgannon

I really like the exclusive mini figs like darth Revan, Martian Manhunter, chrome stormtrooper. Star Wars and comics in particular have so many characters that you could never hope to see ALL of them in sets. Maybe like a Prune face, or Wilro Hood. Or Firestar from spider-man and his amazing friends

  • Parker

    Two words. Mini modulars

  • bmart12

I would love some mini modulars since TRU stopped doing them in bricktober (and their general fate is uncertain), and I still need that Ferrari F40! The collection of min-creator cars is incomplete. Lego please!!

I also love the mini “vendors” like the hotdog cart and flower cart. Great ways to spruce up a city.

  • Brandon Haydu

Henchman Packs for DC/Marvel lines (S.H.I.E.L.D., A.I.M., Hydra, etc.), would prefer actual sets like the $13 Star Wars ones for army building but I’ll take them any way I can get them.

  • Jacob Christiansen

Small rooms that can be put together to form a larger house. A kind of mini modular house building system.

  • Maarten

It’s been stated before, but I too would very much like to own more Mini Modulars, based on the big ones!
Secondly, also mentioned before, the mini version of the Ferrari F40 would be highly appreciated.
I like LEGO sets on a small scale very much!

  • special edition Microfighter or Mighty Micros sets eg: Death Star or Shield Helicarrier
Classic Lego mini models over the years – Lego Space cruiser, castle,
    micro Space Shuttle with boosters
micro Saturn V with launch pad
Monster Fighters crypt – in style of Caveman/woman set
    Historical sets – Vikings/Romans/Egyptians/Cowboy scenarios
    Mini train set
mini scenarios for Lego City – hospital, dentist, newsagent, etc
Statue of hero figure on a horse for Lego City town centre
Minimechs – minigure sized mech creations built up using small parts
LAND AIR SEA SPACE mini/chibi vehicles – vehicles, boats, planes, spacecraft for mini battles

  • Mike Mitchell

    Fairground game booths

  • Jim Lepick

Any Retro/Classic Space sets or minifigs. Give me an Ice Planet anything and I’ll just give you my wallet. Exclusive minifigs from any property would be great. A little over a year ago they gave a classic [1966] Mr. Freeze with purchases to promote the classic Bat Cave. Speed Champions are neat too. Maybe a mini F1 car or hot rod.

  • Tyler Abrams

    1. LEGO Superheroes minifigure characters that won’t be released in sets like comic Daredevil.
    2. Mini Star Wars droid builds like BB8.
    3. Halloween themed mini builds or minifigures

    • doc_lego

I came here to basically say the same. Exclusive minifigures are what make me buy sets from [email protected] Mini/microbuilds you can just find the parts and build your own…

  • Revolutionary GFX

I would love to see sci-fi capital ships. Maybe a small Eclipse Class Super Star Destroyer, or a mini Nebulon B frigate. Maybe steampunk-ify some Star Wars ships? That would be incredible, with the propellers as engines instead of sci-fi engines.

  • Chris Cobbs

I’m a bit late to the party here, but I’m going to throw in my thoughts:

    1) Far and away the GWP I would like to see would be a return of the sets that blended with the Winter Village line. We used to get two sets each year – sometimes they would be an extension of the new set, and other times they would create a smaller piece of the village. I think these were outstanding sets, and as much as I have like the Gingerbread House or Snowglobe, I would really like to see these small Winter Village GWP sets come back. Beyond just buildings, I think with these sets they could look to add some more vintage vehicles, perhaps some lighting, or even more stands for the Village Market. And not that anyone is asking me, but I’d like to see a Winter Village themed CMF series.

    2) This is going to seem like it’s coming out of right field, but I would like to see Lego do a Halloween Village in the same vein that they do the Winter Village. With that, I would like to see a small Halloween Village themed GWP set that could be released in September/October. Anything that you can think of that would qualify as spooky or macabre would be fair game. I think this theme would do great

    3) I echo other’s thoughts that the sets like the hot dog stand, balloon cart or flower cart, that fill in very naturally with the large modular sets – that’s something I’d like to see more of

    4) Unique minifigures – not the buildable stuff like R2-D2 this year. There are tons of Star Wars characters or super heroes to draw from, but there are also plenty of opportunities with themes like Harry Potter, the Simpsons, or even create some more bad guys from Scooby Doo.

    5) I would be interested in seeing some GWP sets that fill out more of the Simpsons line. There’s a lot of material to draw from, and while I love the two larger builds they’ve done, I’d be happy to have some more vehicles or smaller builds from that line. I would hope they would include some new character, or at least a new variation of a character with the set.

  • Digger of Bricks

As a reader of your site for about three years now, this is my first time commenting here, and certainly for a most exciting opportunity!
Here are a few ideas of mine:

    — I personally would love to see a Sky-fi fighter plane done, inspired after the work of JonHall18 and Fredoichi from Flickr. While JonHall18 builds primarily in minifigure scale, Fredoichi is a particularly good builder of the genre in a micro scale best suited for the type of set being inquired about here.
    — Anything Steampunk inspired would be incredible to see, since it is a genre we have not seen TLG touch upon much. Also, the Dieselpunk genre offers some great source material for inspiration!
    — Mecha, particularly inspired after the Jaegers of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.
    — Perhaps a miniature remake of a iconic set from one of Lego’s Classic Space themes of the 1980’s or early 1990’s. There was that one excellent miniature rendition of the Galaxy Explorer done in 2015 for DK’s Great Lego Sets, but I certainly wouldn’t mind another miniature take on the set again!
    — Speaking of space, I would really love to see a retro rocketcraft set inspired after the spacecraft of the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon comic strips of the 1920’s and 30’s!

  • Erik Pfingsten

Brickheadz that are currently only ComicCon (NY or SD) exclusives

  • Jeff Wilson

    -Superman phone booth change
    -Wonder Woman Amazon training
    -Spider-Gwen’s drum set
    -Darth Vader’s meditation chamber

  • Craig

Batman 66 classic TV polybag with Batgirl and her Batcycle. This would go great with the Batman 66 items we have been slowly getting since the Batcave, like Mr. Freeze, King Tut, and the upcoming Egghead

  • Nancy Randle

My son’s favorite GWP has been the Iron Patriot. I agree that something to enhance current great sets is always a no-brainer for me. I was disappointed with this month’s Friends dressed GWP bc it doesn’t go with anything, it just gets kicked around in the end. The Pods at TRU are great with the minifigs. Actual ideas from me:
-Spooky House with a costume minifig
-a bookcase with books sized for Minifigs
-different ocean life (fish, octopus, sea turtle) with snorkeler
    -Friends accessory set

  • ProfessorBrickkeeper

Personally, I’d love to see them release a pocket-sized version of the LEGO Color Palette as a promotional item. I think it would be a very nice addition to the LEGO builders’ toolbag of a brick separator and brick ruler, and would certainly be useful for things like sorting!
