LEGO Marvel Studios Collectible Minifigures Series 2 (71039)

One of the more anticipated sets for me this year are the LEGO Marvel Studios Collectible Minifigures Series 2 (71039) which introduces a new wave of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The set releases on September 1 for $4.99 each and they include characters from Hawkeye, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, as well as my most hyped show, X-Men ’97.

One of the new things that you’ll notice about the minifigures is that they are no longer in bags so you won’t be able to feel for the characters you want. For this wave and possibly for future Collectible Minifigures series, they’ll be in boxes.

There’s really no foolproof way of figuring out which characters are in the boxes unless you open them up. If you decide to weigh them in stores, good luck with that as it’s frowned upon, similar to weighing sports card. Some big box stores are even putting them behind glass doors or cases so you won’t even be able to touch them. I did put out a guide that uses the codes on the bottom that make is somewhat plausible to figure out the characters. It didn’t get fully debunked as I’ve seen examples online that uses this method and it works to an extent although the numbers are different.

The layouts of full boxes also looks to be random as a few boxes I’ve seen online do not match up. If you’re curious, below is what I got in my box. The layout is from back to front and the second set is the bottom layer. The full box did include three complete sets.

Top Layer

Goliath – Beast
Hawkeye – Kate
Hawkeye – Kate
Echo – Echo
Storm – Storm
Agatha – Echo
Wolverine – Storm
Agatha – Agatha
Wolverine – Wolverine

Bottom Layer

Hawkeye – Kate Bishop
She-Hulk – Mr. Knight
She-Hulk – Mr. Knight
Werewolf – She-Hulk
Moon Knight – Mr. Knight
Werewolf – Werewolf
Moon Knight – Moon Knight
Goliath – Beast

Agatha Harkness

She has on the purple/dark blue colored dress/robe that was seen in WandaVision. The torso does show her with the brooch necklace. She has a soft cape to complete her look. Her double-sided head shows her with an evil smile on one side and the winking expression on the other. Her accessories include purple power blasts as well as the Darkhold.

Moon Knight

This version of Moon Knight is the more traditional look that he has with the white wrapping around the body. He is probably the most detailed minifigure from this wave with the arms and the legs being printed throughout. The head is double-sided showing the masked version on one side and Marc Spector’s face on the other. He also has a printed hood and cape to complete his look. His accessories include a pair of Crescent Blades and a printed 1×1 tile of the Scarab of Ammit.

Mr. Knight

This is another look for Steven Grant where he is in an all white suit. The head has a more cleaner look without the wrappings. The accessories for this version are the truncheons. He also has a fish tank with Gus in it.

Werewolf by Night

Jack Russell is an interesting addition to this series since the whole movie was in black and white and the only color that was shown of the character was from concept art. Here he is shown with brown fur all over the body with some tan on the lower part of the chest and inner arms as well as on his face. The legs have dual-molding for his torn green pants as well as for his feet. He does have a double-sided head showing two different expressions. His accessory is a 1×1 printed round tile of the Bloodstone.

She-Hulk

She-Hulk has on the stretchable Hulk suit that has the purple, black, and white color scheme. It’s supposed to be a one-piece suit but the way LEGO designed it, it looks like she’s wearing purple vest over a black shirt. The legs have dual-molding for the rest of the suit along with her white sneakers. She has a double-sided head showing a smirk on one side and a smile on the other. Her accessories include a cell phone with Wong on the screen and a case file for Emil Blonsky.

Hawkeye

Hawkeye has on the newest outfit that was seen in the Hawkeye series. The torso is mostly black with some light purple on the chest and arms. Clint’s double-sided head shows him with a smirk on one side and the other shows a more angry look with a bandage next to the eyebrow. His accessories include his bow and arrow and quiver along with the owl that was seen in the final episode.

Kate Bishop

Kate also has a black outfit but it has more shades of purple throughout the torso. There’s also some detailed printing on the left arm as well as both legs. Like Hawkeye, her double-sided head shows her with a smirk on one side and an angry look but with a bandage above the right eye. Her accessories include the bow and arrow and quiver along with Lucky the Pizza Dog and a printed 2×2 printed pizza box.

Goliath

Goliath hasn’t been seen in his suit yet in the MCU so I’m not sure why LEGO decided to choose him as part of this wave. The suit is mostly white with black and blue detailing similar to Ant-Man’s suit. Underneath the helmet, you have Bill Foster’s double-sided face showing a stern look on one siide and an angry expression on the other. His accessory is a nanofigure of Ant-Man.

Echo

Echo is another character that we haven’t seen yet in their new outfit. She has on a dark red tracksuit with metallic gold printing on both sides of the torso along with on the sides of the arms and legs. In addition, Echo also has a prosthetic leg as well. She has a double-sided head showing a smile on one side and an angry look on the other. One thing to note on her hairpiece is that her ponytail has some wrappings around it. I’m not sure what her accessory is at this time.

Beast

Beast is a brand new X-Men character to LEGO’s lineup. He has the iconic blue fur that we’ve known to love from The Animated Series. The torso also has printing of the yellow X belt. The legs also has the fur printing along with his toes. His double-sided head shows him wearing glasses on one side and an angry expression on the other. I do like the hairpiece mold with the fur as well. His accessories include a yellow X-Men cup along with a brick-built microscope.

Storm

Storm’s outfit is mostly the same as the original one from X-Men: The Animated Series which is the mostly white one. There’s still the yellow straps that go around the torso as well as the belt. She also has the X communicators on as well. She has a soft fabric cape that goes around the neck and the arms. Storm only has a single-sided head showing a smirk. This version of Storm shows her with a mohawk for X-Men ’97 but she’s had this hairstyle before in the original series during the Age of Apocalypse storyline. She has a couple of lightning bolts as accessories.

Wolverine

Arguably the most iconic version of Wolverine is the blue and yellow tiger stripe suit which was in the original X-Men: The Animated Series show and we finally get it in this wave. The torso is mostly yellow with the black stripes on both sides. The arms have printing of the blue shoulderpads along with some hair. The legs have dual-molding for his blue boots. His double-sided head shows him with white eyes and a fierce look for when he has the mask on. The other side shows a stern look with his regular hair. His accessories include his claws along with a Sentinel head.

Results

Overall, the LEGO Marvel Studios Collectible Minifigures Series 2 (71039) is an interesting set. Obviously, my most hyped ones are the X-Men but the it slightly falls off from there.

The two Moon Knights are also pretty nice as well and the white suit can be used for other characters. I do question the inclusion of Agatha Harkness and the Werewolf. Agatha would’ve fit in more with Series 1 since it already had Scarlet Witch and the Vision there. The Werewolf by Night is just random and I’m wondering if a straight black and white version would’ve been okay as well. Goliath is another random character as it doesn’t fit with any other characters yet. I would’ve replaced him with another character from one of the current shows like Kingpin for Hawkeye/Echo.

One very distinct negative with the set is that they are packaged in boxes. This actually deters people from buying them and encourages theft. We’ve seen it with LEGO Vidiyo and those minifigures and we’ll definitely see it with these especially since people like Marvel more. If you want to collect them, I suggest either buying a full box from a reputable seller or just buy either the whole set already opened or individual characters that you want. It really a bummer that LEGO went this route but they are on track with their sustainability efforts with this change.
