Build
As usual with any creature builds, it starts off with the torso and everything will be finished up after you get through the first bag. Here we have some ratchet joints for the front and hind legs. In addition, there’s also a ball joint for the head and another ratchet joint for the tail later on. In front of the body, there’s a large tuft of fur that connects right below the head.
The legs use a combination of printed tiles and regular non-printed tiles to give the striped look. The knees are on hinges while the feet are on ball joints although there’s not that much movement there. The hind legs use ball joints on both the knees and feet. They’re larger than the front and has much larger tufts of fur.
The head is the most recognizable part of the Pokemon and it has a majestic tuft of fur around the head. The eyes, ears, and even the nose all use printed pieces. The mouth is on hinges so it can open and close to an extent.
Lastly we have the tail that is on a ratchet joint because it is a hefty part of the build. It does have the bend in the middle of the tail to give its iconic look. It can move up and down as well as swing left and right. It can stay up if you don’t touch it or else it’ll drop back down.
Results
The LEGO Pokemon Arcanine (72160) is a decent display set but not without its faults. It does look like the original Pokemon from the stripes to the head and tail. One thing with the head is there is an unsightly gap right between the eyes. LEGO has done eyes like this style before but with less of a gap.
Also there are places where parts are just fragile. This includes the large tuft of fur on the chest and the fur behind the legs. If you’re moving it around or posing it, they do like to pop off once in a while since the connections there aren’t that strong.
