Last week, I reported on LEGO’s teaser of an announcement coming tomorrow but it looks like Engadget has already revealed it. The announcement is for a new theme called LEGO Boost (17101) which is somewhat similar to LEGO Mindstorms but geared towards younger kids. The base starter set will be priced at $159.99 and will be available later this year.

The set will have three Boost bricks in addition to 840 LEGO elements. The core unit is called the Move Hub which has a six-axis tilt sensor, two input and output ports, a power button and a light that changes color which was teased before. Powered by six AAA batteries, the other Boost bricks also have a combination color and distance sensor as well as an interactive motor which includes a tachometer.

The set also has instructions for five other models including Vernie the Robot, Frankie the Cat, the Guitar 4000, the Multi-Tool Rover 4, and an Autobuilder. To make the whole system work, there’s also a companion LEGO Boost app for you to download. The app is actually required as it has all the building instructions for the models as well as the programming.

You can read more about the details of individual models for LEGO Boost in the link above.
