Ugh enoughs enough with the movie sets, move on already… my opinion

  2. Purple Dave

About a month ago, I was able to display, for the first time, a total of just over 300 unique Batman-related minifigs at the first Brickworld Michigan. I very much look forward to adding many of these to that total, and several related customs.

Guess they got to the most out of this license…half the sets came out just 6 months ago and are already near retirement

    • Purple Dave

If we exclude all the non-standard stuff like Brickheadz, Dimensions, CMF, and accessories, there were 13 sets in Wave 1, three of which were retailer exclusives. Wave 2 was only five sets, and at present I only see one set marked as Retiring Soon on S@H, which is 70908 The Scuttler (wave 1), which wasn’t even one of the five sets that they picked to launch early for the 2016 Christmas shopping season. I know I’ve seen some mention of Wave 2 sets like Bane and Two-Face being on the chopping block, but I can’t recall seeing any sort of definitive list or proof to back it up. Currently, I’m wondering if it was just a Chicken Little reaction to the list of sets that TRU marked down to tie in with the Bricktober TLBM minifig pack, which included at least two sets for the Justice League movie that’s still a month away, a smattering of both Wave 1 & 2 sets, and even some random Marvel sets.

So, do you have something specific to back that up? I’m mildly curious, but I admit I don’t have a ton of skin in the game. I think the only set I still need to pick up a second copy of is the Ultimate Batmobile, which is unlikely to retire this year.

      • James Busch

The Lego Magazine that is sent in the mail states the Two-Face set is retiring soon.

        • Purple Dave

Yup. I see that now. It says “LAST CHANCE!” right below the set description on p22 of the Holiday 2017 Catalog. But you know what else I see? That’s the only set out of three Wave 1 and four Wave 2 sets that says that in the catalog, and the Scuttler is the only set from the full range that says Retiring Soon online.

Now, if anyone is holding off on some of the Wave 1 sets, I wouldn’t wait too long, since they are all approaching a year since release and could start going out of stock during the holiday rush.

      • Ichabod McCallister

Two face and the scutter were tge ones I knew of. Two face especially I thought came out not that long ago.

        • Purple Dave

June 1st, along with Bane, regular Scarecrow, the Batwing, and Ultimate Batmobile. To date, not a single TLBM has actually been retired, which makes it odd that a Wave 2 set would be out so soon when all of the Wave 1 sets (particularly the five early release sets) are still currently available. On a guess, Two-Face probably sold very poorly. It’s basically $60 for one villain minifig, since the only other minifigs you get are a fairly standard Batman and two more cops to add to the pile. Even the build isn’t likely to drive sales the way the Batwing and Ultimate Batmobile will.

They’re pushing this series way too hard

  5. Victor Renoux

Personally, I’m very excited for the figures, particularly Gentleman Ghost, Black Canary, Jor-El, and Hugo Strange. I can see what some are saying about this being too many sets for the movie, though.

  6. Joseph Smith

I am looking forward to these sets and the new series. I want to have the rest of the obscure villains and other Justice League members. Let the inspiration continue.

    • Purple Dave

I think at this point, the only DC villain who’s missing is Dr. Phosphorus (the glowy guy with the black skeleton painted on him, who I’m _really_ hoping to see in). There are probably between 1-2 dozen Batsuits (and by my count four Tuxedo Dress-Up outfits, or five if you’re hoping for a non-keychain Kiss Kiss Tuxedo Batman) that are still missing, but they got a lot of the ones that Robin actually wears. Acounted for with current and upcoming sets are Fire Starter, Excali-Bat, Reggae Man, Robin, Nightwing, and Glam Bat (only seen in the second trailer, between seeing El Mariachi and trying on Fire Starter). Missing still are Death Merchant (possibly buildable?), Clawed Reigns (needs a new torso print), Silent but Deadly (needs so many parts…), and Bat-ryshnikov (Winged Avenger according to the placard, and I’ve already made one).

For the Justice League, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martain Manhunter, and Wonder Woman are all unchanged from their first retail minifig, so you shouldn’t need them to be included in this theme anymore than you need _another_ fairly generic Superman. To fill out the “culturally insensitive” crew from the old Superfriends, you’d also need Apache Chief, Samurai, and Black Bolt, all of which could appear in the other (presumed) dozen TLBM2 CMFs that aren’t listed. Hawkman is actually different from his previous minifig, so I’d like to see him included in the second CMF wave. Cyborg is different, too, but considering we just got a second version with a third right around the corner, I would be amazed if they make a fourth version just for TLBM…but here’s hoping. I wouldn’t be shocked if we got at least one new Arkham villain, even if I have no need for any (got enough CMF Jokers and Arkham Catwomen that I can cover those myself), and I’d be very surprised if we don’t get at least a couple more characters in their finale outfits (most likely Harley and/or Alfred).

Beyond all that, I very much doubt we’ll see all of the missing Phantom Zone villains, even though WB does own the rights to most of them. I’d love to see a Bat-Mayor with a new cowl that incorporates the wig, but I’m not holding my breath due to the cowl/hair being 100% useless for future minifigs and the fact that they don’t do cloth trenchcoats. I’d also like a Robin from right after he faceplants on the Speedwagon’s dashboard, but again, not holding my breath. I doubt they’ll be allowed to make Barbara in her “Harvard for Police” shirt (I figure that’s what the Scuttler Barbara is meant to represent, since it avoids any licensing issues), but it’d be nice if they made her ball gown. Phyllis from the Phantom Zone is another character that’s stupid simple to make from spare parts, so hopefully they won’t waste a CMF slot on a brick with some round tiles and plates. I think they got all the Harley outfits except from the finale, and they got all the Joker outfits except his pilot disguise. Barbara and Jim are both missing their trenchcoat outfits (again, no holding of breath), but I expect we’ll see at least one more rejected Batgirl outfit in the CMF line.

      • Huh?!?

Nice thoughts Purple Dave, very detailed and on the money. Just a correction it’s not El Mariachi but properly it’s “El Murciélago” which in Spanish means “bat”, of which I really want. I also would really want Batman Beyond, the Batriot and St. Batricks, just if for the lime green cowl and cape.

        • Purple Dave

Whoops, yeah, I think it was a bit late when I typed that up. Batman Beyond would be crazy awesome, since the other two basic DCAU Batman costumes are really easy to make with stock parts. If they do make him, they better get the head right (solid black with white eyes and mouth).

As for any other Batsuits we can expect, all I really care about is that they don’t retread any ground. If I can make it from existing parts, I don’t want them wasting a CMF slot on it.

      • ghost man

i thought the glowing guy was Blight from Batman Beyond. either way..i want that mini.
        ill just say he’s blight.

        • Purple Dave

Yeah, I was more familiar with Blight, so I thought that’s who it was when I first noticed him on the posters, but someone else suggested he was Phosphorus, so I pulled up some info on both.

          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Powers

Blight from Batman Beyond still wears a mostly intact suit.

          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Phosphorus

Phosphorus (who has been a Batman villain for 40 years) has no sense of modesty. Or he just vaporizes clothes maybe. I dunno. But it seems pretty clear when you look at the pictures that this is Phosphorus. However, if they do make a minifig of him, a Blight custom wouldn’t be too hard. You mostly just need a skull and hands in the same color, as long as it’s GitD or some really pale shade of green. Yeah, he should really have a good chunk of his glowy skeletal chest showing through where the shirt would be, but with customs you sometimes have to make compromises if you want to get things done. Then all you have to do is figure out how to make the Batman Beyond costume. And Inque. Inque was really cool.

Especially with the large Joker Manor set, it is a lot to collect. This new wave looks exciting though!

  8. Guilherme Frank II

No Wonder Twins? Oh, well, still gonna by ’em all.

    • Purple Dave

Check #5 and #8 on the CMF list. I assume one of them will include Gleek.

      • Guilherme Frank II

And a bucket of water, hopefully!

        • Purple Dave

Gleek for Jayna, bucket with a 1×1 trans-light blue round plate for Zan? Sounds so logical that I’ll be surprised if the actual accessories turn out much different. BTW, Gleek does appear in the movie, and I just rewatched the movie with commentary last night. One of the things they talked about was needing to get approval for every aspect of character design (apparently Robin’s sparkly cape was not popular). So, in the film, Gleek uses the CMF chimpanzee mold from the S5 Zookeeper. They’ve used that twice for CMFs, and they had to get approval before putting it in the movie, so I don’t see any reason to expect anything different for the CMF. The bucket has also appeared in some CMFs. The only problem is that if that turns out to be the way they do it, Jayna kinda gets left out in that there’s no eagle included. Currently they have the Hobbit giant eagle (way too big both for the character and for a CMF packet to even hold), and they have the falcon/parrot molds, but Jayna would need something in between.

          • Guilherme Frank II

Maybe Gleek comes with Zan, and Jayna comes with an eagle carrying a bucket (not sure which mold for the eagle, but one can dream, right?).

          • Purple Dave

Jayna coming with Zan’s bucket wouldn’t make any sense, and there is no current mood that would work for Jayna’s eagle. More likely if the wanted to include the eagle is they’d make a new mold to come with Jayna, and Zan would get both Gleek and the bucket. Other than Jayna’s hair, I don’t really see anything in the list of eight that would require any new molds, so barring any major surprises an eagle could well be in the cards. But keep in mind that this is all just educated WAG at this point, and even the partial list of minifigs may not be correct.

    • Huh?!?

I am happy to prove you wrong my friend. They are listed in the CMF series 2. Jayna and Zan are their names.

      • Guilherme Frank II

I skipped that part! I’m so freaking happy right now! Thanks!

Images of all of the sets leaked several weeks ago, and the space shuttle in particular looks fantastic. Hadn’t seen the collectible minifigures list before, though, and eager to know who else will fill out the roster.

  10. James Busch

This roster of new sets is sounding great! Although I’m kinda ticked we’re getting a second Hawkman before we get our first Hawkgirl.

    • Huh?!?

James, I too thought that we were going to get another Hawkman as that was rumored way back when. It seems with clarification that we will be getting Hawkgirl. There is an leaked image of her floating around. Google is your friend

  11. CadeSky

Really happy to hear about all of this, but especially a new line of CMFs. I have dabbled in CMF series, but the Lego Batman ones were the only set I have ever completed (or even really wanted to). As a lifelong Batman/DC fan, my favorite thing about this line is seeing all of those obscure characters brought into the fold. Great news! Between this stuff and Star Wars, it really sounds like 2018 is starting off strong for Lego and bad for my wallet!

  12. ghost man

i want a Blight minifigure. he was in the movie for a brief, background moment.

    • Purple Dave

I’m pretty sure that was Dr Phosphorus, in spite of Batman Beyond being in the rack of Batsuits.

      • Kyle Frank

Yeah, it was Phosphorus, not Blight. Or Atomic Skull. Or Metallo. DC needs fewer bad guys that have glowing green-ish skeleton faces.
