As reported back in September, Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and today they have announced that they will be shutting down 180 stores around the country. The closings will start at the beginning of February and will last until the middle of April. It has been noted that the 83 locations in Canada won’t be part of the closings. There are about 880 stores, including Babies R Us, and it’ll be about one-fifth of the total stores closing.
This will make it a little harder to find some Toys R Us LEGO exclusives for some people which is a bummer. I see that there are three locations around the San Diego area that are shutting down, one of which is expected but the other two are surprising.

My store will still be open, they told me that when I was making purchase, but they did tell me that selection will be thinning for a bit.
I used to live by that Ironton store in Aurora CO. Being so slow all the time was probably my favorite thing about going to that store. Although I’m glad they are keeping the location near the LEGO Store in Park Meadows, I hate driving through that area due to the high traffic volume.
I agree the low in store traffic at Ironton made it more appealing than the Park Meadows location, but in the end I just want Lego to stop their promos w/ the company overall. That DJ figure was quite frustrating to obtain.
Is it possible to update the story to indicate how many stores there were and how many are remaining open? Thanks.
I’ve updated the post. There are about 880 total stores with about 1/5 of them closing.
Thanks Allen. Much appreciated.
I just checked several of the addresses near me and every one I checked was a Babies R Us, not Toys r Us. So this might just be the first wave of store closings.
No, there are definitely some actual TRU locations on that list. The numbers also look like they match up with how many they announced they’d be closing. The actual closings may not take place on the same day, but they’re not trying to maximize their profit margin. They’re trying to keep the company from going under. They don’t really have the luxury of drawing this out.
FYI the Kansas, 4646 W. Kellogg, Wichita, KS store is only a Babies R Us.
A few years ago it was a TRU, but it was “shut down” and a BRU was opened in its place.
Not surprised it’s shutting down since on E. Kellogg there is a TRU/BRU store, opposite side of Wichita.
So technically Wichita has had only 1 TRU store for many years now.
The Overland Park location is a babies r us as wel. There is an olathe KS Toys r Us that is closing that isn’t on the list as well
Dang, I haven’t been to that one for almost a year. I was assuming this one managed to stick around. That makes me sad, I would go there cause it didn’t get shopped as hard as the other Overland Park store. Guess that’s why they’re closing it down. Booooo!
I think the mall closing down and the future redevelopment of that area had just as much to do with it as anything.
My local store is on the list, it’s a TRU/BRU, as well as the store near my parents.
any word on clearance sales?
I never saw any Lego drop below 15% off at the store near me that is going out of business. Most sets on sale were about what the Lego store or target/Walmart sell them at normally
Too bad, there are some really great store employees that Will be out because the corporate entity has made some missteps. I think they may have had a tough holiday season that put the nail in the coffin. Twice I scored great TRU deals online only to have my orders cancelled a week later for no reason and no explanation after spending an hour on phone hold. (Once was for a $40 Lego Kylo REN tie fighter and the other was a $200 nerf terrascout drone for 50% off). They fulfilled all my full price purchases though. After the second order was cancelled, I returned the rest of my full price toys r us purchases ( a few hundred dollars worth between kids/relatives/and giving tree donations) out of spite for getting screwed over by them. Right or wrong, I truly felt they suckered me in with deals they had no intention of fulfilling, so they lost my trust and my money. I feel this list is only the start of TRUs downfall. Too bad, there are a few real good employees that treat me well at my local store which is not closing, hopefully this is a wake up call to them to get off the ship before it sinks and while the economy is humming along and hiring.
yep…mine is on the list. and by ”mine” i mean…the store i spend part of my work week at. been there yrs now.
always loved the store….hated the company.
I know a lot of people are pointing fingers at what TRU did wrong that put them in this situation, but it’s not really their fault. They were bought by a holding company that took out loans in their name, sold off TRU _with_ the debt attached, and pocketed the money. TRU was basically handed a bill for somebody else’s party, and while they hadn’t been losing money up until that point, they weren’t making enough to cover the debt load that they were saddled with.
As for the closures, I used to occasionally swing through one TRU on that list, but the two most likely candidates near where I live were already closed a few years ago.
I agree. Them taking in the debt was a terrible move which started their downfall. There were still enough customers to keep them afloat but the debt caught up to them faster than they realized.
People complain about the high prices but yet they still don’t know that we price match pretty much every retailer.
then explain to me how I can walk into my local Target and find a Lego set for its official price instead of an additional $10-$15? Not bashing Toys R Us, I grew up with the store. However, you can’t deny their Lego sets at the very least are overpriced.
That’s a separate problem, but not why they’re in bankruptcy right now. Yes, they are famous (within certain circles) for jacking up prices on anything that sells really well, but that means that LEGO sells really well if the prices are jacked up. Otherwise, they would leave the prices alone.
But that’s beside the point. TRU was a publicly traded company that was bought out and taken private, after which the new owners sucked all the money out and left it in far worse shape than it was in when they bought it.
Price-matching, as Allen mentions, is on a case-by-case basis. You walk in, have them ring up your sets, and show them that they sell for less elsewhere. They reduce the price to match, and you pay the resulting total. And the next time you want to buy from them, you have to do the same thing all over again.
“We”? As in you work at TRU? I honestly can’t remember if I knew that at one point or not, but I kinda think it came up before, maybe right after I started reading the site.
However, the unpleasant truth of the price match is that it kills any promos that are happening at the same time. Knock $5 off the purchase price? That “free” GWP rings up for $10 instead of free. Shave $20 off a few sets? Yeah, the BOGOHO doesn’t trigger anymore, and you miss out on $40 of savings. I actually ran into this when I tried to price-match some Dimensions packs during a BOGOHO sale, and it rang up for more than I expected. Without the price-match, it knocked the total down $15-20.
Yes, I started at TRU but am at a pretty stable position at BRU now. I’ve mentioned it a few times here and there when talking about TRU promos and such.
One of the stores closing by me I have wandered for years why it remained open, the store had maybe 4 employees, the registers were never used, you would just check out at the service desk. Never saw more then 5 or 6 cars in the lot. Last Christmas they acted like a local shipping center, with flat bed carts full of merch being shipped to people at home. I picked up some old sets that would pop up on the shelves from years ago, and they always had plenty of promo items to sell after the weekly event ended. They also put new sets out weeks before the street date.
This is an outrage! I can’t believe all these stores are closing down! This shouldn’t happen and a lot of kids would be pretty disappointed! The ToysRUs flagship store in Times Square in New York City was closed down and a lot of people and kids are disappointed! I would want this to happen and I should probably check out the newer ToysRUs flagship store somewhere in New Jersey!
A lot of these are Babies R Us. There are two closings in my city, but one is a BRU.
Wow a lot Toy R Us stores closing down because people not buy toy from Toy R Us and has good toy and stuff.
Well, at least the Toys ‘R’ Us store in Kenwood is not close!
