LEGO House Tour from Beyond the Brick

LEGO House

After four long years of planning and construction, the LEGO House has officially opened in Billund but last week over 600 AFOLs had a chance to visit before the ceremonial opening yesterday. One of these AFOLs who was able to attend was Joshua Hanlon from Beyond the Brick and they have released a new video giving us a thorough tour of what to expect at the LEGO House. If you aren’t going to Denmark anytime soon, this video is a great way to check out LEGO’s newest attraction without leaving your home.

LEGO Looking for Ideas for Future Gift-With-Purchase Items

LEGO Creator Mini VW Beetle (40252)

We as fans have gotten at lot of great GWP (gift-with-purchase) sets over the years including the LEGO Creator Mini VW Beetle (40252) from earlier this year. The LEGO Community Engagement Team has asked the community to come up with ideas for future GWP items. I’ll be collecting ideas and give a list of top 5 most wanted GWP themes. It is fine if there are multiple comments for the same thing. Your ideas will influence future GWP items so send in some great ones.

The deadline to enter is October 31 but comment below so I can get a list going beforehand.

All ideas are welcome and below are some examples of ideas for a set which you might find helpful to get it started, as you can see there is room for many more good ideas.

– Futuristic Spaceship
– Pre-historic animals
– Modular building, corner restaurant
– Flower(s)
– Steam train (from 1923)
– Underwater creatures

Wes Jenkins Passes Away (1952-2017)

We are sad to learn that Wes Jenkins, Creative Director, Writer, and Designer for LEGO Island, has passed away today. You may remember that last year that Wes was facing some financial hardship and reached out to the community for help.

Wes’ legacy is remembered here in the community with LEGO Island, LEGO Island 2, and co-founded the Learning Range at LEGO. The success of LEGO Island spawned other themes including Island Xtreme Stunts and Racers and influenced subsequent video games such as LEGO Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Thank you to Johnathan who emailed in about this news.

Toys R Us Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

As we know by now, Toys R Us has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but what will happen with the company and all the LEGO exclusives we could get from them? As an employee of Toys R Us/Babies R Us, what I’ve been told by my manager is that we’ll still be running normally like we’ve been running. No stores will be closing in the short term but may close poor performing stores after the holiday season. As for reports that a lot of vendors have refused to ship products, those are only for the smaller companies. I believe the larger companies like Mattel, Hasbro, and even LEGO are still getting products to the stores. There won’t be any “going out of business” sales because this isn’t a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and TRU is not going out of business at this time.

So what happens with all the LEGO products at Toys R Us? There shouldn’t be any change with the selection. For those here in the US who are waiting for the Bricktober 2017 sets, you should still be able to find them in a few weeks. There will still be various sales going on and TRU does price match Amazon and other retailers.

The Toys R Us bankruptcy comes just weeks after LEGO reported lower profits and layoffs themselves. It looks like that the whole toy industry isn’t doing well as a whole as more kids are gravitating to electronics and video games. We’ll see what happens after the holiday season but this is … Continue

The LEGO Group Releases 2017 Half Year Results, Profits Down

LEGO has just released their financial details for the first half of 2017 and it’s not looking too good for the best toy brand in the world. Compared to the same time as last year:

– Revenue down 5 percent to DKK 14.9 billion compared with DKK 15.7 billion
– Operating profit down 6 percent to DKK 4.4 billion compared with DKK 4.7 billion
– Net profit down 3 percent at DKK 3.4 billion compared with DKK 3.5 billion
– Cash flow from operating activities was DKK 4.6 billion compared with DKK 3.9 billion

LEGO Group Chairman, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp stated,

We are disappointed by the decline in revenue in our established markets, and we have taken steps to address this.

We are working closely with our partners and we are confident that we have the long-term potential of reaching more children in our well-established markets in Europe and the United States. We also see strong growth opportunities in growing markets such as China.

Some of the best performing themes for 2017 include LEGO City, LEGO Friends, LEGO DUPLO, and LEGO Technic, all in-house IPs. The LEGO Batman Movie also did very well.

As a result of the profit decline, the company will have to trim its total global workforce by about eight percent which is about 1,400 jobs by the end of the year.

The LEGO Group will now have to restructure the company as well as having to clean up their inventory to simplify the business model.

What are your thoughts on this surprising … Continue
