BrickSlopes 2014 in the Works

I’ve been recently contacted by Steve Poulsen to talk about a new LEGO convention called BrickSlopes which will be happening in a few months. This convention is started by Steve along with Cody Ottley and are members of UtahLUG. They have been in the Utah LEGO community for a while and decided it was time to start a LEGO convention in their area. BrickSlopes is an event created for everyone around the world but especially for individuals who are in the Intermountain West and Pacific coast since there aren’t that many LEGO conventions in that geographical area.

Like with many other LEGO events, there will be public showings where you can see many cool LEGO creations from awesome builders. Also, LEGOLAND California’s Master Model Builder, Gary McIntire, will be the keynote speaker at the convention. The event will be happening May 1-4 with the public showings on the 2nd & 3rd at the South Towne Exposition Center in Sandy, Utah. Check out Steve and Cody’s interview on Beyond the Brick from last year where they go in-depth more about BrickSlopes. Also, follow their Facebook Page for updates about the event.

My Response to a Little Girl’s Letter to LEGO (Editorial)

A young girl by the name of Charlotte has been making the rounds on the internet of a letter seen above that was sent to LEGO.

Dear Lego Company:

My name is Charlotte. I am 7 years old and I love legos but I don’t like that there are more Lego boy people and barely any Lego girls. Today I went to a store and saw legos in two sections the girls pink and the boys blue. All the girls did was sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and they had no jobs but the boys went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, even swam with sharks. I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun ok!?!

Thank you.

From Charlotte.

I usually don’t write about controversial topics like this but this is something I would like to touch on. From what I’ve seen, many people have been praising Charlotte for writing such a powerful letter to LEGO. As a LEGO fan, I have to disagree with Charlotte’s letter as well as to everyone I’ve seen supporting her and here’s why.

LEGO has been trying very hard the past few years to get more younger girls building from the highly popular LEGO Friends sets as well as the newly released Disney Princess sets. Charlotte’s point in the letter is that she wants more female minifigure to have more adventures. There have been plenty of female minifigures in “boys” sets such as a … Continue

I was recently contacted by Jeff from Cooper Works and was introduced to his decal kits project on Kickstarter. If you like to enhance your MOCs with addition details, this project is for you. There are a number of decals sheets that you can unlock at various pledge amount levels. What’s cool about these decals are that they can fit on many different types of bricks. The goal of the project is to raise $5,500 and it is already over 25% supported with 24 days to go. Check out what Jeff and Cooper Works has to offer and show your support if you’re liking what you see.

Beyond the Brick Episode 100 Featuring Keith Severson

The Beyond the Brick team has just filmed their 100th episode and their guest for the show is the head of the LEGO Community Engagement and Events Team, Keith Severson. The interview covered many topics including what he does as the head of the CEE Team and also touched on many questions about the LEGO Community. It was very informative and it was neat to hear what goes on behind the scenes of what the CEE Team does. If you have some time, check out the interview below.

The Brick Fan Turn 2 Years Old

Today marks the second year that The Brick Fan has been online. What started out two years as a just a simple hobby has turned into a somewhat of a part-time job for me. Last year, I made a goal to double the traffic that the site had and that was accomplished, more than what I expected. I’m not going to post any stats because they are similar to the ones in last year’s recap and I don’t want to repeat what’s been said already.

First and foremost, thank you to all the readers. This may sound cliche but without you guys, this site would be absolutely nothing. I never imagined that a tiny site like this would have such a following. It may be a small following but I appreciate everyone just taking a little bit of your time and reading what I have put out. All of your positive comments and feedback are what motivates me to keep this site going. I don’t have any plans to stop so let’s see how long we can keep this going.

I also want to thank all the people in the LEGO community that I’ve met or been in contact with last year. I’ve made a lot of new friends and acquaintances and hope to connect with more people this year. To the staff at the Fashion Valley LEGO Store, thanks for letting me hang out there with you guys during my downtime. It’s been cool interacting with everyone there and seeing how the store is … Continue
