The LEGO Group at SXSW Interactive 2013

The LEGO Group was in Austin, TX on March 11th and gave a presentation at SXSW Interactive 2013. TLG was represented by Tim Courtney, LEGO CUUSOO’s Community Manager, and Peter Espersen, LEGO’s Head of Online Community. They discussed the state of the LEGO Fan Community as well as LEGO and social crowdsourcing, aka CUUSOO. What everyone learned is that when you combine LEGO plus anything, it’ll probably be “Awesome!” and if someone has an idea, they could crowdsource with CUUSOO and hope there’s enough momentum to get the required amount of supporters, such as the Minecraft set which only took two days to achieve that goal. Sometimes an idea will have enough supporters but it doesn’t fit into LEGO’s strategy and will be rejected like The Winchester from Shaun of the Dead. Although there are ideas that make us want to purchase them, LEGO knows they cannot please everyone. They want ideas to be a win for the fans but also a win for the business. Check out the slideshow below to see more of LEGO’s SXSW Interactive 2013 presentation and learn how social crowdsourcing has benefited fans as well as the company.

Future LEGO CUUSOO Projects by Team BTTF

With the success of the DeLorean Time Machine project on LEGO CUUSOO, the recently submitted Jules Verne Train, which was the top supported project last week, and some other ongoing projects, Team BTTF have been on a roll lately. This morning, I received an email from Masashi Togami and Team BTTF has some exciting news to bring you. Starting next month, they will be continuing releasing more LEGO sets from the Back to the Future series and will be publishing new projects on CUUSOO for four consecutive months. We’re predicting that the DeLorean Time Machine will be a huge hit, not just from LEGO fans but Back to the Future fans as well. If the future projects are also successfully supported and pass the review stages, we could potentially have a whole line of BTTF sets to display. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing what these future sets look like from Team BTTF!

April 2013: “Marty’s Toyota Pick-up”
May 2013: “Doc’s Big Truck with radiation suits on Marty and Doc”
June 2013: “Griff’s Future Vehicle”
July 2013: “Locomotive 131”

LEGO CUUSOO Land Rover Defender 110 Achieves 10000 Supporters

The Land Rover Defender 110 by Sheepo is the latest project to hit 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. It now qualifies to be included in the Spring Review joining the Exo Suit, the Andy/Bugdroid the Android, and the Legend of Zelda. The Defender 110 was listed on CUUSOO on May 14, 2012 but that shows persistence does pay off in the end.

The deadline for the project to reach the required number of supporters to make it to the review stage would’ve been March 4th but it got some extra support from Land Rover USA and their social media team. I sent a tweet to them to see if they could do something to rally some support and they happily obliged by sending a tweet about the project to their 85k+ followers. They went even further to post to their Facebook Page as well to gather support from their fans. In terms of social media, Land Rover was a really good sport to help out.

The Batmobile Tumbler Minifig Scale build by BrentWaller now becomes the most supported project on CUUSOO. Congratulations to Sheepo for this achievement! See below for the official comments:

Congratulations on 10,000 Supporters, Sheepo!

You did it, just in time for the Spring Review deadline! Again, great work and we’re impressed with all of the detail and functionality that you have put into the Land Rover Defender 110.

Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

LEGO CUUSOO Back to the Future Jules Verne Train

Team BTTF is back with another project on LEGO CUUSOO. This time, team members of Masashi Togami and Sakuretsu have unveiled the Jules Vernes Train on LEGO CUUSOO. The train was featured at the end of Back to the Future III where Doc Brown and his family comes to visit Marty in the future. The project also makes uses of the Power Functions and the railroad tracks so you can integrate the train to your existing models. Check out the details of the project below as well more images of the Jules Verne Train. If you like what you see, please go support the project here and let’s help Team BTTF achieve 10000 supporters. Like in the DeLorean Time Machine, Masashi will donate all the proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

This train is a steam locomotive style time machine. The characteristics of this project are as follows.
– Include Mini Figures(Doc Brown, Clara, Jules, Verne, and Einstein)

LEGO CUUSOO Interview With Team BTTF

LEGO CUUSOO has recently interviewed Team BTTF to learn more about the creators of the LEGO DeLorean Time Machine, Masashi Togami and Sakuretsu. As you may have already know, the DeLorean was the set chosen by CUUSOO in the Summer Review to be the next set that will be produced by LEGO. Also, the 1% royalties that Masashi gets from the sale of the sets will all be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which is pretty awesome in it’s own right.

The purpose of Team BTTF was to reintroduce the movies to a newer generation of fans using LEGO. Each member of the team had different roles with Masashi taking the lead with product concepts and the press relations. Sakuretsu handles the model building and the custom minifigures. Legohaulic was also involved in building the UCS Time Machine.

The interview was very insightful on how the concept of the DeLorean as a LEGO set came from a sketch to becoming a reality. Read the whole interview on the LEGO CUUSOO blog here.

LEGO CUUSOO Legend of Zelda Achieves 10000 Supporters

A day after the Andy the Android hit 10000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO, the Legend of Zelda project by Ragaru follows suit. They join the exclusive club of projects that have achieved 10000 supporters and now qualify for the Spring Review by the LEGO Jury in March.

The first Legend of Zelda project by Mingles was rejected in the Summer Review due to LEGO having to make new parts. In this version, the set was created using mostly existing parts and colors. The set also will rely on printed/stickered pieces to create a close representation of the characters. We’ll see what LEGO thinks of this project later this year. Congratulations to Ragaru for hitting this great milestone!

The Land-Rover Defender 110 now becomes the highest supported project on CUUSOO. With about a month left until the March 4th deadline, it might also have a chance to reach the goal as well.

Congratulations on 10,000 Supporters, Ragaru!

2013.02.08

Huge congratulations to Ragaru and all of the supporters of this LEGO® CUUSOO project. Your work provides another approach to the concept of a Legend of Zelda™ LEGO set and we admire that you have not allowed the results of the previous project to discourage your efforts.

While we cannot create new specific LEGO elements within the operational framework of LEGO CUUSOO, we will consider this concept in earnest in the Spring 2013 LEGO Review period.

What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Review Board” composed of designers, product managers,

The deadline for the Spring Review is March 4th so there may be a couple more sets joining the Bugdroid in Spring Review. Congratulations to GLHTurbo for this great achievement. Read the official LEGO comment below:

Congratulations on 10,000 Supporters, GLHTurbo!

2013.02.07

Congratulations to GLHTurbo and all of the supporters of this LEGO® CUUSOO project. Google™ Android™ fans have spoken. We’ve heard loud and clear that you want to be able to make your own Andy out of LEGO bricks. So, we’ll get to work considering the possibility!

Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A LEGO Review Board composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We’ll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product, including playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every LEGO product goes through a process like this and must
