LEGO CUUSOO Space Marines Temporarily Gone

If you’ve been searching for the Space Marines LEGO CUUSOO project by Nick Royer, you’ll see that it’s been taken off the site…temporarily. According to LEGO, the name is trademarked buy another company and have requested that LEGO stop using it. After doing a little research, Games Workshop owns the name “Space Marines” and LEGO is obligated to agree to the other company’s wishes. Although the project is removed at the moment, LEGO has been in contact with Nick to choose a new name for the project. When a new name is chosen, it’ll be back online and and continue on in the Winter Review. Below is the official statement from the LEGO CUUSOO blog:

Hi LEGO Fans. You’re probably wondering what happened to those awesome-looking space military guys on LEGO CUUSOO; you know, the ones that reached 10,000 supporters just before the Winter Review deadline. Well, the name of the project used by the fan builder is actually a trademark owned by another company, and they requested we stop using it on our site.

While we let you submit projects that refer to trademarks owned by others, we don’t enforce others’ trademarks ourselves. However we are legally obligated to comply when we receive a request from a rights holder to remove their trademarks.

Since all of you voted the project to 10,000, and since the artwork is original and based on LEGO elements, it’s our opinion that the only trademark infringement here is the use of the name. So, we’re in contact with

On May 6, 2012, the Firefly Serenity project by Thomas Lockwood, aka tbone_tbl, on LEGO CUUSOO achieved 10000 supporters to be reviewed by the LEGO Jury to see if it was a good fit for the LEGO brand. Unfortunately, the project was deemed inappropriate for the core audience of children ages 6-11 and was quickly rejected.

LEGO CUUSOO Space Marines! Achieves 10000 Supporters

After almost a year since the Space Marines! project by NickRoyer was submitted to LEGO CUUSOO, the project has finally reached the 10000 supporters needed to be considered to be an official LEGO set. The Space Marines are loosely based on the Galaxy Patrol Collectible Minifigures so there wouldn’t be an issue with licensing or any Intellectual Property (IP) issues either. The theme also could also fit in with the new Galaxy Squad sets but these are totally separate themes so LEGO might not want to have both themes selling at the same time. From what we’ve seen in the past, Space themed LEGO sets do sell really well so it would be beneficial for all parties involved but that’s up to the LEGO Jury to decide. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens after the review. Congratulations to Nick for this amazing achievement! Below is the official LEGO comment.

Congratulations on 10,000 Supporters, NickRoyer, GreenLead, and CrashSanders!

    2012.11.29

Space Marines is a fun concept, well thought out, and with broad-based support. You’ve done a great job of presenting it concisely with a lot of possibilities. Further it is a great example of a high quality concept refined over time into something that looks like it has real potential as a LEGO product.

Congratulations on achieving 10,000 supporters. We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

    What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A “LEGO Review Board” composed of designers, product managers, and other key

LEGO Street Fighter Minifigures For Charity

Street Fighter 2 minifigs - complete roster

A couple of months ago, Julian Fong, aka levork, posted images of his custom LEGO Street Fighter minifigures on his Flickr account as well on LEGO CUUSOO. Unfortunately, LEGO quickly rejected the project due to the content not being appropriate for children, but now you can own these same minifigures as he is selling them. Julian has put the minifigures on eBay and all the proceeds will be going to the Child’s Play Charity. If you’ve wanted these Street Fighter minifigs, bid on them to help a great charity, which is a win-win situation. There is about 4 days 12 hours left on the listing as of this posting so please help out Julian and Child’s Play. Below is a brief description of the listing:

As an eBay Affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

For sale is a full set of custom Street Fighter 2 Lego minifigs, entirely created by me. These are non-official, customized minifigs representing the entire cast of Capcom’s video game Super Street Fighter 2. That’s a grand total of seventeen minifigs: Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Akuma, M. Bison, E. Honda, T. Hawk, Fei Long, Dee Jay, Guile, Blanka, Zangief, Vega, Balrog, Sagat, Dhalsim, and Cammy. Water-slide decals were designed and printed by me and applied to new Lego parts, then sealed with polyurethane for a durable finish. Custom hair elements were fashioned either from a combination of other Lego parts, and/or incorporate epoxy sculpts or paper elements. These figures are meant for display or very light play: the decals are fairly

LEGO CUUSOO Purdue Pete Achieves 10000 Supporters

In less than 36 hours (35 hours and change), the Purdue Pete project by Sandra San Miguel, SanDSanM, on LEGO CUUSOO has achieved 10000 supporters to be considered to be an official LEGO set. With extensive campaigning by Purdue students, faculty, and staff, the number of supporters quickly rose. If I’m not mistaken, I believe that Purdue Pete is the fastest LEGO CUUSOO set to gain 10000 supporters, even beating out the LEGO Minecraft set which took 48 hours to gain that amount of supporters.

Just some quick info on the set, Purdue Pete is 16 inches tall about took about 900 bricks to create. The Boilermaker icon is the first college/university related set to hit the magical number of supporters which is a little different from the other sets that have already achieved consideration and under review. The set will now go to the review stage during the Winter Review quarter. If Purdue Pete becomes an official LEGO set, Sandra will get 1 percent of all the sales and the proceeds will be donated to the PVM Bound scholarship fund, according to the Purdue News Service. Congratulations to Sandra and Purdue University for reaching this great achievement! Below is the official comment from LEGO:

    Congratulations on 10,000 Supporters, SanDSanM!

    2012.10.26
Boiler up! Wow, did the supporters for this project ever roll in quickly. You’ve made a very nice sculpture of Purdue Pete, and as your fellow classmates and alumni have shown, it looks like he’d would find a nice home on quite a number

    LEGO CUUSOO Summer Review Updates

LEGO has given a little teaser on their blog on the statuses for the LEGO CUUSOO projects that reached 10000 supporters earlier in the year which includes: Eve Online Ships – Rifter, Back To The Future DeLorean Time Machine, The Legend of Zelda, and the Modular Western Town.

The LEGO Review board is still working on some of the final details of the Summer Review, which must be complete before we are able to announce any of the results. Projects in each quarterly review happen in batches, so we announce the results for each project at the same time. We’re sorry that we cannot yet commit to a date where we will share the news.

The Fall reviews have now started and The LEGO Jury will take a look at the most recent CUUSOO projects which have also achieved 10000 supporters. These sets include Thinking With Portals, the UCS Sandcrawler, and the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity.
