POP! The Art of the Geek Exhibit at San Diego Comic Con 2014

In a matter days, San Diego Comic Con 2014 will be upon us. Fortunately, not all of the cool stuff will be inside the convention center. Pop! The Art of the Geek is an art show that showcases various “contemporary artists aiming to explore the narrative of identity within the pop-culture spectrum while decoding the origins of comic book influence.” The exhibit will be held from Wednesday, July 23rd to Sunday, July 27th at Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts (363 Fifth Ave. at J Street). For those unfamiliar with downtown San Diego, the gallery is right in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter, just a couple of blocks away from the convention center.

Some of the artists that will be featured are a couple of renowned LEGO artists that you may have heard before, Nathan Sawaya and Brandon Griffith. Nathan will have a number of his creations on display including his Han Solo in Carbonite sculpture and Stormtrooper helmet.

Brandon will be featuring his mosaic of The Comedian’s badge from the Watchman comics called It’s All A Joke.

The show is curated by Nathan and all the artwork displayed will be for sale with the proceeds benefiting the Art Revolution Foundation. If you’re going to SDCC 2014 and need to take a break, why not head over to the exhibit to take a look at these awesome pieces of work in person. Check out more details of the show as well as some of the artwork on display on the Pop! The Art … Continue

SDCC 2014 Exclusive LEGO Minifigure Giveaway Process Revealed

Our good friend, Joe Meno (BrickJournal) has stumbled upon how the exclusive LEGO minifigure giveaways will be handled at San Diego Comic Con 2014:

We also received a tip from a reader who emailed LEGO regarding the minifigure giveaway process for this year. The giveaway will take place in the same area as last year – the Pavilion Terrace outside of the Sails Pavilion, but they have made several other changes to the process to avoid the traffic congestion and complaints from last year. Instead of a ticketing process, attendees will walk up to an iPad and hit a button to enter, and they will know immediately if they are a winner. Attendees will have one chance to enter per day – badges will be scanned to prevent people getting in line twice. And like last year, a different minifigure will be given out each day, but it sounds like they won’t announce it until the end of the day, as opposed to announcing the giveaway schedule beforehand as in previous years.

So pretty much the ticketing process will be in the same area as last year, which was a pain to get to if you’re not familiar with the layout of the convention center. Instead of being handed tickets, you will entering digitally via an employee with an iPad. Right then, you’ll know immediately if you’re a winner or not. Also, badges will be scanned each day so people can’t get in line again and enter twice. For this year, the minifigure that … Continue

LEGO The Hobbit Bard the Bowman Exclusive Minifigure at SDCC 2014

LEGO The Hobbit San Diego Comic Con 2014 Exclusive Bard Minifigure

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the third exclusive minifigure that LEGO will be giving away at San Diego Comic Con 2014. Today, the news is themed towards The Hobbit and Bard the Bowman will be the minifigure that attendees will be trying to get. This version of Bard the Bowman will have an unique outfit and is different from the one in the Lake-Town Chase (79013). The article notes that to avoid the debacle of last year, the people running the booth will implement a system where they would scan an attendee’s badge to determine the winners of the exclusive minifigures.

Also at SDCC 2014 will be a LEGO statue of Smaug built by Erik Varszegi. It took Erik 625 hours to design and create and it stands over 6 feet tall, 64″ long (5 1/3 feet) by 88″ wide (7 1/3 feet). It is built with 83,433 pieces and weighs a whopping 411 lbs. It will be displayed at the Warner Bros. booth (#4545).

LEGO Stay Puft Marshmallow Man - SDCC 2014

Yesterday, LEGO sent out some press images of some of the builds you can expect to see at San Diego Comic Con 2014. I held off on reporting it because I wanted everybody to have time and soak in all the news that went on including exclusive The Collector minifigure, the report on the Batmobile and the Ghost exclusive sets, as well as the Unikitty exclusive minifigure.

One of these LEGO builds is a statue of the Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It stands 25″ high and 19″ wide and weighs around 18lbs. Mr. Stay Puft took over 60 hours to create and is built with 2,654 bricks. It will be displayed at the LEGO booth (#2829) throughout the convention next week. Check out more images of Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and a time-lapse video (via FBTB) below:

It took the builders 350 hours to design and build and consists of 28,251 bricks. You will be able to take a picture with it at the LEGO booth.

Unikitty Exclusive Minifigure at San Diego Comic Con 2014

The LEGO Movie SDCC 2014

Yahoo Movies has revealed another exclusive minifigure that will be given away at San Diego Comic Con 2014 and that is The LEGO Movie Unikitty. This version of Unikitty will have a double-sided head with a “Cuteskitty” on one side and a “Cheerkitty” on the other. The article doesn’t mention how the giveaway will be handled but I’m going to assume that it will be like last year where tickets are handed out and winners are listed at the LEGO booth.

Also in the image above on the right side, it shows some kind of The LEGO Movie set that is scheduled to be released in January 2015. There’s no other details at this time but you can see the set includes a Micro Manager, Angry Kitty, Batman with his grappling hook and Batarang, and a Skeletron with a gun.

Update: Below are images of the set from SDCC.
