Happy New Year from Bricks Magazine

January is the time for exciting new LEGO sets and 2016 is no exception

The best thing about a new year is new LEGO sets. It may be a time to make a fresh start or celebrate new beginnings, but when that clock strikes midnight on 31 December it means we have a whole new wave of sets in our grasp.

Bricks Magazine Issue 8

The 2016 line-up looks impressive: NINJAGO is taking to the skies, City has a great new island prison and the intergalactic craziness of NEXO KNIGHTS boasts some great new pieces. Alongside all these store releases we have two massive exclusives available in the form of the Ghostbusters fire station and the very impressive Brick Bank Modular.

Bricks Magazine Issue 8

Inspired by these vast buildings, this month at Bricks we are wandering into the world of all things urban. Starting with the Brick Bank, Mark and Dr Dave examine this modular floor by floor, leaving no tile unturned. Packed full of new elements and great colour pieces, this new offering looks set to be a winner. Chris Pearce investigates the latest 2016 sets and highlights what we should be looking forward to most. Alongside this there are amazing custom builds in the form of Janet VanD’s theatre, Patrick Bosman’s piece of historic Holland and Jamie Douglas’ twin-roofed Brickadilly station.

If you’ve been following my posts for the past week, you would know that our friend Just2Good has been posting official box art images for the 2016 sets. He’s back again with another video and this time it is for the LEGO Speed Champions theme. As I mentioned before, there are some new car manufacturers that are included in the upcoming wave including Chevrolet, Ford, and Audi and returning from this year is Porsche. There will be seven sets in 2016 but the ones that interest me the most are the Audi ones. Which sets are you looking forward to?

LEGO Ideas “Creative Ideas Wanted” Campaign

If you follow LEGO’s social media pages, you might have seen the image above and sort of a call to action post for LEGO Ideas. Over on their blog post, they’re kicking off a “Creative Ideas Wanted” campaign where they’re wanting people to submit original idea projects and not ones that are based on existing items.

We’ve seen a plethora of Ideas sets that have been released that are based on licensed properties and LEGO is pretty much looking for something original. The best original CUUSOO/Ideas set in my opinion is probably the Exo Suit because it was cool, very good playability, and most importantly not based on anything.

This is sort of a double-edged sword because people tend to go for licensed projects and non-licensed projects seem to fall by the wayside but it’s hard to get support if people don’t know nothing about it and the project doesn’t get exposure. I’ve tried to help promote projects back then but I’ve made a change earlier this year because I get so many requests for a post. It’s gotten to the point where I get a couple a day and if I continued what I did, the site would be nothing but Ideas projects. However, I don’t mind tweeting them out which I do now.

When you visit various LEGO fan sites and Facebook pages over the next month, there’s a good chance you will run into our “Creative Ideas Wanted” campaign. Kicking off on the 26th December and continuing until the end of January,

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 15 (71011) To Be Released in February

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 15 (71011)

LEGO has announced it yet but in the latest LEGO Club Magazine, there’s a little blurb about the release date of the Series 15 Collectible Minifigures (71011). As you can see below, Series 15 will be available in February along with the Series 7 LEGO Mixels, most likely on February 1st. I know people have been wondering and asking about it since they were revealed a few weeks ago. They’ve usually had a January release the past few years but LEGO has some huge releases next month including the LEGO Nexo Knights, LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters (75827), the Brick Bank modular building, and the rest of the winter wave sets. I have a feeling that LEGO wanted to save something for February and not overwhelm everyone next month. For people across the pond, Shop@Home UK has Series 15 with a January release.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, WhiteFang has already done his review over on Eurobricks. I’ve also done my little feel guide for Series 15 if you’re interested.

Thanks to everyone who emailed/tagged me on this piece of info.

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batman v Superman Kryptonite Interception (76045) Review

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Kryptonite Interception (76045)

If you’ve been following my posts, you may have seen the report of some of the new LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes sets have shown up at various retailers like the Kryptonite Interception (76045) which is based on the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie. We first saw a teaser of the set back at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. The set contains 306 pieces and retails for $29.99. The contents of the box include three numbered bags, two instruction booklets, a small sticker sheet, and a comic book.

LEGO Star Wars 2015 Advent Calendar (75097) Round Up

LEGO Star Wars 2015 Advent Calendar (75097)

The LEGO Star Wars 2015 Advent Calendar (75097) has been completed yesterday and there were some things that I liked about it and there were things where I wasn’t too impressed by it.

Good

One thing I really liked about this year’s advent calendar is the little sub-themes the builds were separated into like Tatooine, Endor, and Hoth. Even the flap on the box doubles up as a little playmat featuring the destinations.

A were a lot of the models that I really enjoyed including the Sarlaac, Sandcrawler, Imperial Star Destroyer, and the AT-AT, just to name a few.

All of the minifigures this year were pretty good since we didn’t get a Battle Droid for the first time ever in an advent calendar. Of course there are also some standout minifigures like the homage to the Ralph McQuarrie’s 1979 Lucafilm Christmas card with the R2-D2 and C-3PO minifigures. The other minifigures that I liked were Jawa and the Hoth Rebel Trooper which was a little teaser on the character that we’ll get next year.

Bad

There were also some things that I didn’t enjoy as much like the weapon racks we get every year. There were also the ones with the play features which turned to be rather bland like the catapult, the turret, and the Hoth Command Post. Other than that, all the other builds were decent.

I also think the retail price of $39.99 is a little overpriced for what you get but it is … Continue
