Brick Loot June 2015 Subscription Box Review

Recently, I received a surprise Brick Loot June 2015 subscription box at my doorstep. I first did a review when they first launched at the end of last year. I had some mixed feelings about it since it was advertised as “a monthly box subscription company geared towards LEGO and BRICK Lovers” but I didn’t expect that it would include some clone brands.

Let’s just jump into the box and see what we get. This month’s brick Loot box is called Brickasaurus Park to celebrate the release of Jurassic World in theaters. Since this is a non-paid review, I’m going to give my full honest opinion on it from a typical LEGO fan’s perspective.

The first thing I noticed was the custom Nerdasaurus Rex build by our good friend Tommy Williamson of BrickNerd. As you can see, it’s a pretty cute and nerdy T-Rex. In my eyes, this was one of the few things that interested me as LEGO purists wouldn’t like to see what else is included in the box besides one other item.

The next thing is a Nanoblock set NBA_010 featuring a Stegosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Currently this set retails for $26.99 on Amazon. Nanoblock is a clone brand that has a similar design of LEGO bricks in a smaller scale.

Next up are some items that I honestly do not want to mix in with my LEGO bricks. These are some buildable animals that are clearly Chinese knock-offs by a company going by Wange Toys or Wange Industrial Co. … Continue

No Starch Press Introduces Beautiful LEGO: Wild!

Beautiful LEGO: Wild!

No Starch Press has just sent out the official press release for Mike Doyle’s latest book, Beautiful LEGO: Wild!. This is Mike’s third book in the Beautiful LEGO series that showcases nature-inspired LEGO artwork from artists in the LEGO community. You can also pre-order Beautiful LEGO: Wild! on Amazon. Check out the press release below.

San Francisco, CA (June 19, 2015) — Hailed as a “stunning array” by TODAY and “a feast for the senses” by Wired, the Beautiful LEGO series is back with a new collection of breathtaking art. The highly anticipated Beautiful LEGO: Wild! (No Starch Press, $24.95, 232 pp., September 2015) is brimming with imaginative and vibrant masterpieces from the most talented LEGO builders in the world.

From adorable pets and marine critters to magnificent arboreal landscapes, the creations in Beautiful LEGO: Wild! are sure to delight the artist, naturalist, and LEGO enthusiast in everyone.

Interviews with LEGO masters give readers an exclusive look into the minds behind the art. For featured builder Sean Kenney, creating art with LEGO is more than just connecting pieces—it’s capturing the essence of a subject: “It has to have life. My sculptures need to be rooted in personal expression.” One of Kenney’s pieces, Monarch, is made from more than 60,000 LEGO pieces.

Tom Poulsom, whose amazing bird sculptures became an official LEGO set this year, explains the appeal of working in such an unusual medium. “To me, LEGO is the best puzzle in the world. There are infinite combinations, and it’s possible to create pretty

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes SDCC 2015 Exclusive Sam Wilson Minifigure Revealed

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes SDCC 2015 Exclusive Sam Wilson

USA Today has revealed one of the exclusive LEGO minifigures that will be given away free at San Diego Comic Con 2015, Sam Wilson. This version of the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Sam Wilson is the “All-New Marvel” Secret Wars version in which he is the new Captain America.

To get the All New Captain America (Sam Wilson) minifigure at SDCC 2015, there will be a raffle done, similar to last year, where they had iPads set up and you just tap it to see if you’re a winner. If you are, you’ll be sent to an employee to pick it up and if you’re not, hopefully you can find a good price for it on eBay. I’m sure the line for this minifig will be very long.

One thing to note is that the article states the limited-edition minifigures will be obtained from drawings Thursday through Saturday so that means there are only three being released this year which is rather odd since there was one every day last year.

LEGO Star Wars San Diego Comic Con 2015 Exclusive Dagobah Set Revealed

LEGO Star Wars San Diego Comic Con 2015 Exclusive Dagobah Set

Complex has revealed another exclusive LEGO set that will be sold at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the LEGO Star Wars Mini Dagobah set. It will have 177 pieces and will retail for $39.99 at the LEGO booth #2829.

The set features the iconic scene from The Empire Strikes Back on Dagobah where Yoda was exiled to and was the training grounds for Luke Skywalker. The set has a mini X-wing and Yoda’s hut as well as a mini Luke and Yoda.

One thing that is new at SDCC 2015 is that fans must pick up a ticket at the Pavilion Terrace which is like a raffle. This is definitely a nice change since we don’t have to rush down to the exhibit hall when the doors open. The LEGO Star Wars Dagobah set joins the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Throne of Ultron set as the ones being revealed so far to be sold at SDCC 2015.

Update: Below are the official rules for the LEGO exclusives.

LEGO SDCC Retail Exclusives: Winning ticket required for purchase
You must first enter the drawing by picking up a ticket (see below) and then attendees go to the LEGO booth to redeem their ticket if they have a winning ticket and purchase the set at the LEGO booth. The LEGO booth will be located in Hall D, booth #2829.

Ticket Drawing Location:Pavilion Terrace (Upper level outside Sails Pavilion). Attendees must first enter the main Convention Center entrance from the line at the front of the main building. Entry

First Look at LEGO Classic Pirate Minifigure Retro Set

Hoth Bricks has given a first look at this year’s VIP Retro Minifigure Set. Last year, we had the LEGO Classic Spaceman Minifigure (5002812) which included a white Spaceman. For this year, the set will be a Pirates set which includes a Pirate minifigure on a boat mast with a skull flag, a shark, a palm tree, and a barrel. I assume the packaging of the box will be similar to last year with the slide out box and includes a small booklet taking a look back at the Pirates theme.

As for the requirements to get the Pirate VIP Retro Minifigure set, it’s stated on the image of 55€ but for us here in the States, it’ll probably be a gift with purchase of $99 or more at LEGO Stores and on Shop@Home for LEGO VIP members. It was rumored that this set would be happening in July but it doesn’t show up on the July 2015 LEGO Store Calendar so I think it’ll be happening here in a few months. Last year, this promo was in September so I think it’ll be around the same time. What do you guys think of this Pirate Retro Set?… Continue

Celebricktion LEGO Exhibition Happening in October

I was recently sent an email about a LEGO exhibition that will be happening in October called Celebricktion which will be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, GA. Read more about the event below:

CELEBRICKTION: a celebration of the LEGO brick building system

October 10-11, 2015; 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Cobb Galleria Centre
Atlanta, Georgia

Tickets are $15 at the door; a portion of each ticket sale goes to non-profits.

For this awesome event, Lego builders Harry and Austin Nijenkamp “free built” (meaning no plans or drawings) an entire city with over one million LEGO pieces featuring parks, skyscrapers exceeding 12-feet tall, busy streets, and even a parade containing thousands of LEGO minifigures. It took over a year to build this amazing city!

Also at this event:

– A replica of the Nijenkamps’ Lego studio to provide insight into how they create their giant exhibits.

– BRICKS’ custom 4′ M.O.C.s (my own creations) including Helm’s Deep, Winter Village, Spooktacular Haunted Scene, and
Pirate Island.

– A LEGO robotics demonstration.

– Kids’ freebuilders area with over 100,000 LEGO pieces.

– Pictures with “Mr. Bricks” and other mascots

– Various LEGO games.

– Kids’ bounce house.

– Concessions.

– Numerous creations by other metro-Atlanta LEGO enthusiasts.

– Custom 3D-printed minifigure heads of yourself.

– More than 20 LEGO vendors selling hard-to-find, new, and used LEGO sets, custom minifigures/bricks, light kits, and more!

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Avengers: Age of Ultron Throne of Ultron SDCC 2015 Exclusive Set Revealed

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes SDCC Exclusive Throne of Ultron

San Diego Comic Con 2015 is upon us and The Hollywood Reporter has given us our first look at one of the exclusive sets that will be sold there, the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Avengers: Age of Ultron Throne of Ultron. The set consists of 203 pieces and will be sold for $39.99. It will have four minifigures: Ultron and three Ultron Sentries. It looks like all the minifigures are already in the current wave of Avengers: Age of Ultron sets with Ultron being the same as in The Quinjet City Chase (76032) and the Sentries looking similar to the ones in the Iron Man vs. Ultron (76029) set but with the added neck brace piece.

As we all know by now, these exclusives are getting almost impossible to get when at SDCC unless you’re in the know. There will be a limited amount sold each day and usually the line will be filled up in a few minutes after the doors open. I’m going to try and get in line for it but I’m chances are slim that I’ll get one. I wish that LEGO would do what Mattel did with their SDCC exclusive this year and allow attendees to pre-order online and pick them up during the convention so it’s more organized. Many don’t know this but the LEGO booth isn’t ran by LEGO employees but LEGOLAND employees which is ran by Merlin Entertainments.
