LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611)

It looks like the exclusive 2017 May the 4th LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) polybag is now out of stock over on [email protected]. It didn’t make it past the whole promotional event period online but some stores may still have them available. If you weren’t able to get one online but have a store close to you, I suggest calling your store to see if they have any left over. If you decide to just buy the polybag outright, they are available on eBay.

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) 2017 May the 4th Polybag Review

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611)

The annual LEGO Star Wars May the 4th promotional event starts in just a few hours and usually we get exclusive minifigures as part of the promo but this year, LEGO has decided to do something different. For this year, we get a brick-built R2-D2 (30611) polybag to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. The polybag consists of 70 pieces and you can get it for free with purchases of $50 or more in LEGO Star Wars products.

When the set was revealed to be this year’s promotional polybag, there were differentiating opinions on it. Some welcomed the change while others are somewhat disappointed that it’s not an exclusive minifigure since there are a ton of other characters that could be great minifigures.

Build

R2-D2 is actually a pretty decent build with the body useing SNOT techniques to create the look. You actually build it upside-down before turning it back over to finish it up at the end. The head piece is exclusive to this polybag and there’s printing all around it. It is attached in the middle of the body with a Technic pin so it can actaully rotate around. Just a side note, the head is the same size as the R4-P17 Astromech droid head from the UCS Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter (10215).

There is some articulation at the legs and feet using Technic pins as the main things to connect the legs to the body and the feet to the legs. There’s also the retractable central leg in the front to show R2-D2 … Continue

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) to be May the 4th Promo Polybag

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611)

It looks like we have some confirmation of what the May the 4th LEGO promotion will be for this year and we’ve already seen images of it before. A reader has emailed in details and they were told that it will be the brick-built LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) polybag. You can get it for free during the May the 4th promotion with a LEGO Star Wars purchase of $75 or more at LEGO Brand Stores and on [email protected]

I’ve been told that it this year’s promotional polybag would be a little different from previous years when they were exclusive minifigures and it appears that the brick-built R2-D2 will do just that. If you don’t wish to make a purchase during the May the 4th promo, you can build your own as the instructions have been online for a while. The only downside is that you have to substitute the front detailing as the printed 1×1 tiles are exclusive to this set. We’ll definitely confirm it when the May 2017 LEGO Store Calendar comes out in a few days.

Thanks to Sid for the info.

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) Polybag Building Instructions

LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611)

A few days ago, I reported on a new LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 (30611) polybag. This was a brick-built version of the droid which looks very cute. It looks like the instructions for the build are now online. It looks all the parts are fairly common except for the couple of printed 1×1 tile pieces for the front, which are exclusive. So if you already have all the parts, you can building R2-D2 pretty easily but have to do without the detailing in the front.

There’s no word on the origins of the image or how to obtain this polybag at this time but I can say that it will be a pretty popular one when it is available.

Update: It seems that the initial images was found over at Minifigure Price Guide.
