The LEGO Movie Sequel to be a Space Action Musical?

News on The LEGO Movie Sequel has been somewhat quiet since it’s been pushed back to 2019 a new interview might be shed some new details for the movie. The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay appeared on the Shanlian on Batman podcast and he revealed that The LEGO Movie Sequel could be a lot different from the first.

LEGO 2 is going to be this big musical and space action movie. They need a lot of the writing, a lot of development, not only with script development, but development with songwriters. So it was very ambitious to get that movie out.

If the sequel is indeed going to be a space action musical movie, there will no doubt feature a lot of Benny the Spaceman, voiced by Charlie Day in the first movie. Of course, this could very well change again between now and 2019 so don’t get your hopes up too high since there has already been a lot of changes already so far.

If this was the same team, I would trust them, but it’s not, so I’m skeptical.

If I were them, I’d release some shorts in the mean time. See what works.. keep the interest alive.. sell some toys.. make me a believer.

Um, It still is the same team from the first film but just a new director this time around. Lord and Miller still wrote the script and are producing.

I always assumed that this comment was a joke. I mean, a space-action-musical? Thank simply isn’t feasible.

Personally, I’d like to see them do a Lego Bionicle movie!

Don’t get my hopes up? That it will be a musical? Even if I wasn’t incredibly partial for it NOT being a musical, I would still think this is was just a lame attempt at sarcasm.

At least SOMEONE shares my opinion. 😛

I preferred the first movie’s concept of actually using normal environments and making vehicles out of them – they were essentially great part packs and interesting vehicles that turned into other vehicles or buildings.

I’ve little interest in seeing them go into space, that would easily be the most boring and generic thing they can do with Lego because they have so many unique and interesting settings on the planet and they abandon those.

As for the musical concept, i was a fan of ‘Everything is Awesome’ because of its creepy nature and how they cut the rap section out of the movie – yet i’ve no faith in them doing a good musical aspect after The Lego Batman movie were it lost its comedic charm.

Having the movie take place in space is far from generic and boring. There are a lot of creative possibilities they can do with that concept especially with this being a Lego Movie. There are infinite possibilities.

As for the musical aspect, I do believe they can make a good musical. “Everything Is Awesome” was a great song in it’s own right for its satire and “Who The Bat(Man)” and “Friends Are Family”, while not really satire, were very catchy and enjoyable silly songs. Them doing a musical this time around could indeed work if they approach it in a “South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut” or a “Muppets” kind of way where there is some satire within the songs.

They have a ton of potentially cool Earth-based concepts and could have established the world in which they live, the different divided areas were a unique concept and those now being capable of crossing over into one another (potentially creating a problem of a ‘lack of structure’) could have been a great storyline to follow.

Instead its just, lets go into space. One of the key aspects that worked with the first movie was its satire – and its jabs at ‘evil corporations’ and things. They created an interesting world and now they are abandoning it to explore others – just feels a little boring.

Especially in a movie era where we’ll be primarily dominated by cosmic based stories in 2019.

the first one was good, so at least we have that…

(as long as there’s more unikitty variants in the sets, i’ll be fine with whatever this clusterf♥ck ends up being.)
