Beyond the Brick Brickworld Chicago 2014 Kickstarter Project

Our friends over at Beyond the Brick are going to be attending Brickworld Chicago 2014 in June and they have a Kickstarter project going to help raise funds for them to produce a high quality DVD. The money that is raised will allow the crew to have updated equipment, supplies for the DVD, and the rewards that will be sent out to backers.

  • We’ve also partnered with some luminaries of the LEGO community to offer you a slew of special rewards!
  • Limited edition LEGO Batman comic signed by LEGO comic artist Paul Lee.
  • Two micro castle builds by the talented David Frank and Alice Finch.
  • Have your character rendered in the brick by Iain Heath aka “Ochre Jelly.”

Since they have already reached the base goal of $1,000, there are also stretch goals and rewards such as a Frog Pod by Simon Liu and skulls by Guy Himber of Crazy Bricks.

So what will be included on the DVD?

  • Over 2 hours of high quality edited videos from the Brickworld convention floor
  • One on one interviews with some of the world’s most talented LEGO builders
  • A guided tour of the the whole Brickworld Chicago convention hall
  • Creative LEGO building technique ideas from some of the world’s top builders
  • Video coverage of different convention events like the speed-build and the LEGO grand prix
  • Get an inside peek into how builders prepare and set up for Brickworld Chicago
  • Plus anything and everything else that catches our eye at the convention

ME Models Railway System Kickstarter Project

If you’re a fan of LEGO Trains, then ME Models has something that might be of interest to you. They have a Kickstarter project going that is a fully functional model railway system that compliments the current LEGO Trains product line. ME Models is a company that produces custom LEGO building kits and specializes in houses, businesses, and various vehicles.

The project that they propose is a rail system that expands on the LEGO 9-volt system. They have created a fully functional rail system that is available in different lengths and curves that uses both metal and ABS materials.

The Kickstarter project has a $79,000 goal but it currently has 22 hours left with $64,000 already raised as of this writing. For the LEGO Train enthusiast, this is you chance to support something that expands on what LEGO currently has right now. Check out more details of the ME Models Railway System here.

Update: The goal has been reached but there is still 12 hours left so there are further incentives for pledging more:

$85,000 – For those of you who desire narrow gauge rail, we will be manufacturing 2×6 connectors and plates. These connectors and plates will allow you to expand upon the current narrow gauge offering.

$100,000 – If the project reaches the $100,000 level, ME Models will have the ability to produce a 45 degree cross in ABS plastic. A metal version, will soon follow. For those of you pledging $49 or more, you will receive the ABS version, estimated January 20.

BrickLink at Philly Brick Fest and Seed Part Challenge Announced

Philly Brick Fest Swag - BrickLink

A couple of days ago, Alice Finch on the BrickLink forums discussed her experience at Philly Brick Fest. A few others of the BrickLink team also attended PBF including Eunice, Alex, as well as founder of gaming company Nexon and new owner of BrickLink, Jung-Ju “Jay” Kim. During the event, the first BrickLink Building Challenge was held for AFOLs where they had to build something from prepackaged bags of miscellaneous parts. Carter Baldwin’s bird was the winner of the competition and the model will be submitted into the new BrickLink MOC Shop. Second place went to Lucas Robinson for his starfighter and Andrew Nickerson got third place for his spaceship. Check out the final creations from all the participants below.

In another post, Alice announced the first official Seed Part Challenge to the public. The part that has to be used in the build is a medium azure mudguard #50745. Below are the rules for the challenge and there are some very good prizes up for grabs.

Rules for submission:
• Creatively feature 1 or more of the seed parts in a unique, appropriate model of 250 parts or less
• Submissions can be made on moc.bricklink.com the first week of July and will need to include at least one clear photograph of the model. (More details on the submission process once the site is up.)
• It is recommended to not use extremely rare or expensive parts, as the winner of the challenge will be invited to submit their model to the MOC

Philly Brick Fest 2014 Swag

So it’s been a few days since I got back from Philly Brick Fest 2014 and I finally have some time to show off what I got on my trip. Throughout the four days, there were games and activities you could do to win some awesome prizes. The first things I got while I was there was a goodie bag filled with treats and the exclusive Ben Franklin minifigure set.

Later after the first day, there was a thing called Bowling for Bricks at Arnold’s Family Fun Center. The first game was sort of a relay where teams had to bowl and build at the same time. One person would bowl and another person would build and the first team to complete the build wins. Unfortunately my team lost that game. The second game was for the highest team score. My team consisted of Chris (Bricks4Chris), Dan (Classy Bricks), Mark, and me. The prize that I got was the LEGO City Auto Transporter (60060) which I had to break down because it wouldn’t fit in my suitcase.

After everyone left the bowling alley, me, Chris, Dan, and Chad had our own little competition for who can bowl the first strike. The prize for this game was the LEGO Racers Race Rig (8162). Somehow I rolled the very first strike but Chris ended up tying me. In the second frame to everyone’s surprise, I rolled another strike while Chris barely missed, hitting 9 out of the 10 pins. I won the cool … Continue

Philly Brick Fest Makes Child’s Wish Come True

Philly Brick Fest 2014

During Philly Brick Fest, I had the privilege to meet a young man named Evan. He was part of the Make-A-Wish program and his wish was to attend Philly Brick Fest. The great staff at PBF made the wish come true for him. Christin took charge and made Evan and his family feel as welcomed as possible during all four days of the event. Evan joined in on many activities that were held including the Brick Fest Derby, the Collectible Minifigures Identification Game and PolyMOCs as well as hanging out at David Hall’s Minifigs4u booth.

At the end of the show, Chad had some wonderful surprises for Evan including a LEGO Storage Head filled with rare minifigure polybags such as the Chrome Darth Vader and White Boba Fett. That wasn’t all. Evan also received the LEGO CUUSOO NASA Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover signed by Stephen Pakbaz.

Overall, the crew at PBF was honored to have Evan and his family attend the festivities and is happy to have made his wish come true. This shows that not only LEGO brings people happiness but also brings families together. Check out all the images of Evan’s time at Philly Brick Fest below.
