LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 (10248) Review

LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 (10248)

Late last month, LEGO officially revealed the LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 (10248) to fans and there was an overwhelming positive response to it. The set contains 1158 pieces and retails for $89.99. The contents of the box includes 8 bags numbered 1 & 2 and a packaged instructions booklet along with a small sticker sheet.

Box

The box for the LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 is a fairly medium-sized box but does have some weight to it. The background for the box is dark blue and lights shine on the F40. You’ll notice on the top right corner that the LEGO Creator Expert logo has been changed to a new one. Ferrari likes to number their official products and my set is 199403694. The box is of the tab opening variety and not the stickered flap kind.

Build

The building of the Ferrari F40 is pretty straight-forward as with many other vehicles. You start off with the chassis that consist of a lot of TECHNIC pieces for its foundation. The first signs of the signature red of the car is when you build the bottom of the door sides. Next up is the the building of the seating and steering column. The steering wheel is attached with some pins so it is able to adjust the height. Although it doesn’t do anything, the sports seats are able to fold forward just a little bit to give the back some clearance and detail. Other details in the F40 cabin is that it is stick shift gauges in the steering column. The steering wheel itself has the iconic yellow Ferrari horse logo. The door can open and you can also adjust the side mirrors.

In front of the car, you have this sleek curve that the F40 is known for. You have the Ferrari emblem in the front of the hood along with a couple of NACA ducts. The hood opens up to reveal a luggage compartment filled with a spray can, a wrench, and a some white box thing. Finally there are a couple of regular headlights as well as the flip-up ones which are stickers.

On the F40 hatch, you have the yellow license plate that says F40. On each of the license plate are the red brake lights and yellow reverse lights. The lower area has the triple exhaust in between the rear bumper. The hatch can open up to reveal the massive removable engine. You can prop up the hatch using the stay rod that’s included. The wing and the plexiglass rear window rounds out the details of the hatch.

The twin turbo V8 engine itself is a very cool build made with some very interesting building techniques as well as creative use of parts including the revolvers. To remove it from the car, you have to lift the hatch and remove the back bumper. There are also a couple of green 1×4 plates included in the set that are attached to the bumper but I’m not exactly sure what they are used for.

Finally, there some new wheel alloys that are iconic to the car. Unfortunately, the front wheels do not turn as there are no steering mechanism in the F40 so the play feature there is a little limited.

LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 (10248)

Overall, the LEGO Creator Ferrari F40 (10248) is very nice car that does give its real-life counterpart some justice and makes a great display piece. The building techniques used in creating the supercar is absolutely fantastic and the final outcome is instantly recognizable. There are some stickers but they aren’t as intrusive as you think although I wish the Ferrari logo on the hood was a printed piece.

I do highly recommend the Ferrari F40 (10248) when it becomes available for LEGO VIP members from July 15-31 as well as to the general public on August 1st. I do see that Shop@Homeicon has the set listed at $99.99 but from the press release I got, it was at $89.99 so I believe S@H is listed incorrectly. I would like to give a big thank you to the LEGO Community Engagement and Events (CEE) team for sending the set out for me to review.

I’m confused by the pricing of this set as well. Hoping they didn’t just last minute decide to up the price by $10! Also, I’m a new VIP member and was wondering do they typically allow early purchase of these types of sets online or only in Brick and Mortar Lego Shops. I unfortunately reside in the South where we get no Lego love and haven’t seen anything official from Lego regarding the supposed early sale of the set. So just curious as to how that generally works.

VIPs usually get early access to a set a few weeks before it releases to the general public. This set should be available later today at LEGO stores and on Shop@Home. To find if there will be early access a set, LEGO posts on the store calendars which I report on near the end of a month or on the 1st. Hope this helps.

OK, awesome. I see the Lego Shop page has updated to show the set as being available for VIPs but man what is up with that price hike??

    • Allen

I have no idea for the jump in price. I’m guessing it was an error when it was announced.

Do you have its box dimensions and weight?

    • Allen

      Sorry, no I don’t.
