This issue is full of treasure to be discovered, perhaps nowhere better than across our multi-page retrospective on LEGO Pirates, the theme that launched a generation of swashbuckling adventure and brick-based play for many of us.

Alongside some specially-created photography inspired by this iconic theme, we sit down exclusively with the lead designer responsible three decades ago for creating more than just this range of classic LEGO sets, but the world of LEGO Pirates as we know it.

From the past to the future, Issue 10 of Brick Fanatics Magazine also explores new theme Hidden Side, talking not only to the design team behind these unique, transforming LEGO sets and their tie-in app, but also with industry experts, who offer a real insight into the LEGO Group’s latest attempts to merge digital and physical play.

Meanwhile, Overwatch’s two new upcoming releases – 75977 Junkrat & Roadhog and 75976 Wrecking Ball – get the designer walkthrough treatment, as the LEGO Group’s Woon Tze Chee exclusively explains the detail and charm that has gone into creating these eye-catching video game creations.

Rumored List of Retiring LEGO Star Wars Sets – 2019

Here’s something that was pretty interesting that came though my email during the weekend regarding some rumored retiring LEGO Star Wars sets. The folks at Rebelscum has reported on a rumored list of some current LEGO Star Wars products that will be retiring within the next year.

LEGO does have their own Retiring Soon page but it isn’t frequently updated until items have already been retired. It’s pretty much a guessing game of when something will be retiring since LEGO doesn’t officially announce it. The rule of thumb is sets have roughly about a two year shelf life while UCS sets have a slightly longer one depending on how popular it is.

I’m not saying this is a definitive list but Rebelscum is a trustworthy source and they wouldn’t report on something unless they are confident about it.

The LEGO Movie 2 Sets Retiring Soon?

Here’s an interesting article about The LEGO Movie 2 sets that came through my email this morning. Online retailer ToyPro has posted that TLM2 sets could be retiring sooner than expected. As they are a retailer, they are able to order directly from LEGO and they asked there is something going on with the sets and LEGO responded with, “The movie sets will not come back as far as I know now due to disappointing resale.”

If you’ve been on LEGO Shop@Home and on Amazon, you would have noticed that a majority of The LEGO Movie 2 sets have been on sale for a few months now. Even the D2C Welcome to Apocalypseburg! (70840) has been discounted on Amazon. If you saw the post about the first half 2019 financial results, TLM2 didn’t even crack the top five selling themes on the list. Sets usually don’t go on sale on Shop@Home unless they are retiring soon so this could be an indication that they may be gone by the beginning of the year.

Thanks to Edon for the heads up.

LEGO Classic Space Galaxy Explorers Geeky Jerseys Back in Stock

Almost five years ago, I reported on some cool apparel that LEGO Classic Space fans may enjoy and it has been so popular that it has been in and out of stock for a long time. Over on Geeky Jerseys, they have the Explorer jersey available again which features the Classic Space logo across the front and the Galaxy Explorer patch on the back. The arms also has some space patches on it as well.

The jersey goes for $99.00 which is around the same price that the mid-to-higher end hockey jerseys go for. You can customize the name on the back as well as whatever number you choose. Keep in mind the jersey are custom made and they are limited time so get it before it’s gone again.

This is not a paid sponsorship. I think it’s just cool.

LEGO Lead User Lab Details

A few months ago, LEGO announced they are launching a new program called the Lead User Lab. This program will bring in ideas from LEGO fans themselves and potentially bringing them to life. LEGO has released a FAQ over on the LEGO Ambassador Network of some details on how the Lead User Lab will work. If you have some ideas that you would like LEGO to do, this may be of interest to you.

We’re happy to let you know that the Lead User Lab kicked-off in August. It’s early days, so you probably have a bunch of questions that need more clarity – what it is, what ideas we’re looking to incubate, what’s in it for you, ways of working, and more. Below you’ll find a quick FAQ. If we missed anything you’re curious about, let us know!

What are we up to next?

In the coming weeks, we’ll focus on fundamentals of the idea intake process and how to evaluate and prioritize them. At this stage, we’re also assessing the ideas we’ve received via email over the summer, since we first revealed the Lead User Lab on the LAN blog. We’ll let everyone know as soon as possible about the outcomes and whether we can continue with any of them in the stretching/incubation phase. High level, the Lead User Lab funnel looks like this: (1) Idea intake – (2) Stretching/Incubation – (3) Piloting – (4) Idea realization.
