LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batwing (30301) Polybag Review

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batwing (30301) Polybag

A few days ago, we reported that the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes Batwing (30301) polybag was showing up at Target stores in the Halloween section. I was notified by my LEGO Store friend Nia who found them on the shelves so I took a little trip and lo and behold, they were there. The Batwing (30301) consists of 45 pieces and goes for $3.99 which is a very nice $0.09/piece considering it’s a licensed polybag.

Build

The design of the Batwing is very nice with a good selection of parts used to build it. Although it looks kind of flimsy, it is very sturdy. The Batman symbol on the front 2×2 curved slope would have been nice to have but it looks fine without it. One thing I didn’t like on the Batwing are the 1×8 gray plates on the bottom that holds the wings together. It just seems a little off to me and makes it look like a ski. To round it off, you also get two flick-fire missiles.

Results

Overall, the Batwing (30301) polybag is a good pickup if you can find it. It looks a little bit better than the Tumbler (30300) polybag from earlier this year. On a side note, you also can get the Batwing (30301) polybag when you purchase LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham at Target.

LEGO Store September 2014 Monthly Mini Build Event Racing Plane (40102) Review

LEGO Store September 2014 Monthly Mini Build Event

Today is the first Tuesday of the month so that means the September 2014 Monthly Mini Build event at the LEGO Stores took place. This month’s build is the the Racing Plane (40102). As usual, families were waiting for their turn to build the set. Like last month, kids could etiher take the set home or build inside the store.

The Racing Plane is a pretty simple to create. It contains 37 pieces and in addition to the plane, you also get a little stand with a flagpole and a plant. There’s nothing much to the set but it seemed that a lot of kids really enjoyed building it.

A special thanks to all the new people I met today and a continued thanks to the awesome staff working there who continues to spread the word about this little blog.

LEGO Seasonal Halloween Bat (40090) Review

A few days ago, we reported that a new LEGO Seasonal set would be appearing in stores for the upcoming Halloween season, the Halloween Bat (40090). Like with the previous holiday sets from earlier this year like the Valentine’s Day Teddy Bear (40085) and the Easter Bunny (40086), LEGO has released these cute little creatures to mark the particular occasion. This set contains 156 pieces and retails for $9.99 for a very nice $0.06/piece.

The box contains two un-numbered bags and a small instructions booklet. The Halloween Bat is pretty easy to build with some typical building techniques. On the back of the instructions booklet, you can also see the Seasonal Thanksgiving Turkey (40091) set that should be coming out in a month or so.

There is some articulation in the wings and the feet. The wings have a nice folding effect that allows it to hold the included brick-built pumpkin if it so desires.

Throughout this year, I’ve really like these little seasonal sets and the Halloween Bat (40090) isn’t an exception. It’s a nice addition to my current cast of seasonal characters. The set is now available at various LEGO Brand Stores as well as on Shop@Home but the once in stores sometimes sell out pretty fast.

On a side note, I did see a couple of the Easter Bunny sets on clearance today at my LEGO Store in Fashion Valley so if you’re still looking for one, you can now get it cheaper than the normal retail price.

LEGO Classic Spaceman Minifigure (5002812) Promo Review

Today starts the month of September and that means we finally get the LEGO Classic Spaceman Minifigure (5002812) promotion that the Europeans had a few months ago. In recent months, it appears that LEGO has been focusing more on classic Space sets like the Exo Suit (21109) and Benny’s Spaceship (70816) and this little promo set just adds to it. The set contains 19 pieces and is free with purchases of $99 or more.

Box

Unlike other LEGO promotions, the box for the Classic Space Minifigure is made of a matte-like packaging material with a stud design all around. On either side of the box, there is a classic LEGO Systems logo which has a cool nostalgic feel to it.

The box opens up by sliding out the tray from the right side which shows the contents of the set: an instruction booklet and sealed bag of pieces. The tray itself also has the Classic Space logo.

Instructions Booklet

The actual instructions in the booklet are just two pages to show how to put together the spaceman and the robot. The rest of the pages is a timeline from the last 38 years of LEGO Space sets as well as some of the Space minifigures. A majority of the Space-themed sets have been well represented on the timeline.

Custom LEGO Transformers Brick Label Metalhide MB-01 Review

A few weeks ago, I was sent something very cool to review. As a fan of LEGO as well as Transformers, this was definitely right up my alley. JK and Alanyuppie from Malaysia has created Brick Label, transforming robots that uses 100% genuine LEGO parts. The first set in their Masterbrick series is Metalhide MB-01 which is pretty much G1 Ironhide of the Autobots from the Transformers series. The Masterbrick Series is a play on the TakaraTomy/Hasbro Transformers Masterpiece Series.

Alan has created a number of LEGO Transformers as you can see from his blog. Like with the regular Transformers toys, Metalhide can change from vehicle mode to robot mode. However unlike LEGO Creator sets where you have to take apart pieces to build another build, you do not have to do that with this guy. You just do some twisting and folding of the joints and you’ll have the alternate mode.

As we all know, creating anything with LEGO takes a certain skill set with all the designing that you have to put into it but creating a transforming LEGO build takes even more planning since you have to figure out how to transform the car without affecting the integrity of the set.

When you build Metalhide for the first time, you’ll notice there are some very neat building techniques used to build the robot mode. Alan has done a great job in making the robot mode a playable model. There are a number of different types of joints used to articulate Metalhide. … Continue
