The LEGO Movie Snubbed at the Oscars

So I wake up this morning and see that the Oscar nominations have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Despite being one of the top four grossing movies in 2014 with $257 million domestically and $468 million worldwide, The LEGO Movie has been totally snubbed in the Best Animated Feature Oscars category which includes The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. The LEGO Movie was liked by many including critics and has a 96% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Honestly, I haven’t even heard of the last two movies on the list and how many of you actually watched all five in theaters. I’m going to say a majority of the readers here never even watched the the last two movie considering that Song of the Sea only made $100,360 and The Tale of Princess Kaguya made $597,978 domestically. One of the movies was also released in December so how can that even be considered. Sure all the nominees are worthy but come on now. I also checked out the rules of eligibility and I’m pretty sure The LEGO Movie fits the definition:

An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of more than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and

The LEGO Movie 2 Takes Place 4 Years After First

There are some new details of The LEGO Movie 2 coming out of Empire Online today. As we know by now, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be writing the script for the movie which will be released sometime in 2018. One quote that stood out from the interview is:

Miller: “Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view?

“And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.”

What I got from that is The LEGO Movie 2 will take place four years after the first one with Finn most likely returning as a character. It’s not known at this time if Jaden Sand or Will Ferrell will be returning as Finn and “The Man Upstairs.” Also, since Finn is a little older now, will he be going into the “Dark Ages?” It’ll be interesting to see what Lord and Miller will come up with for the sequel.

Also today, Warner Bros. was released a new clip showing some of the behinds the scenes stuff that happened while creating The LEGO Movie. You can check that out below.

The LEGO Movie Winter 2015 Set Videos

LEGO has released some short videos featuring the three new The LEGO Movie sets that will be available in January 2015. We first saw these videos on the official LEGO Facebook Page, but I just waited until the YouTube videos were available before writing about it. The first set is Batman & Super Angry Kitty Attack (70817) which includes Batman, Angry Kitty, and a Skeletron. It will retail for $9.99.

The second video features the Double-Decker Couch (70818) which is a combination of sets that have been released this year. It includes the Double-Decker Couch from MetalBeard’s Sea Cow (70810) and Emmet’s Car from a Toys R Us event back in February. The draw of the set are the five minifigures you can get which includes Emmet, Ghost Vitruvius, Benny, President Business, and the new Unikitty that was revealed during SDCC. Note that Ghost Vitruvius is also a new minifigure while Benny is from a more expensive set in his Spaceship (70816)icon. This set will retail for only $14.99.

The final set for The LEGO Movie Winter 2015 wave is the Bad Cop Car Chase (70819). This set contains Bad Cop’s police car as well as small motorcycle. LEGO Club The LEGO Movie Police Mech Building Instructions

The LEGO Movie Police Mech

In the new Nov-Dec 2014 LEGO Club Magazine, I found another thing that is pretty fun and creative. By using parts from the The LEGO Movie Super Secret Police Dropship (70815) or from your existing parts, you can create the Super Secret Police Mech shown above.

On the LEGO Club website, they have provided free instructions for the Police Mech in PDF format. There are 321 LEGO pieces used to create one of these mechs. This is a cool addition to your Super Secret Police army if you are able to create one.

Lord and Miller Writing Script for The LEGO Movie 2

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has signed Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to write the script for The LEGO Movie 2. The pair wrote and directed the first LEGO Movie which became a blockbuster hit grossing $468 million in theaters. They were slated to produce the sequel but there wasn’t any indication before whether they would do anything else besides producing. There’s no word yet if they will be directing as well. Since Lord and Miller will be writing the script, it’ll be interesting to see which direction the sequel will go, whether it’ll continue off from the first movie or do a new storyline.

The LEGO Movie 2 will be released on May 26, 2017. Dan Lin and Roy Lee will be producing along with Lord and Miller. Jill Wilfert, Matt Ashton, Chris McKay and Kara Lord Piersimoni are signed on to be executive producers.
